7 Myths You Will Only Hear In Nigeria

Nigeria is a country that is blessed with rich cultures and traditions. The indigenous locals practise traditional beliefs from time immemorial, and they tell stories that portrays the existence of supernatural and spiritual being. These stories are passed down from one generation to another  orally. 

Here are some of the interesting mythical beliefs

1. Keeping a broom horizontally after use invites the dead: According to Nigeria folktale, keeping a broom in a standing position after use is wrong and have serious consequences. Doing this could  invite the spirit of the dead and as such, strange noises and voices will be disturbing the person that swept the room last either physically or in the dream.

2. Whistling at night invites spirit and snakes:   Difference tribes in Nigeria believe that whistling at night is a taboo and their are account of people who have whistled at night and met  by evil spirit, snakes or found themselves in strange places.

3. Eating inside a cooking pot:  The locals believe that eating inside a cooking pot has a connection with gods that controls the rain. If you continue eating inside a cooking pot for numbers of days, it will rain heavily on your wedding day.  How true is this? Lol.

4. Beating a boy/girl with broom or turning stick: It is very common to see children run away when adult picks up a broom or turning stick to flog them. When you flog a boy with broom, his penis size will reduce to the smallest possible size and for girls, beating them with turning stick will cause and hindrance to the growth of their breast.

5. Someone walking over your legs: If someone walks over your legs it is believed that you will end up giving birth to kids who will look just like that person. Pregnant women are quick to take their legs out of the way when someone tries to pass.

6. Sun and rain:  African indigenous also,  are quick to judge that if it rain while the sun is still  shining a lion is giving birth in the Forest.

7. Stretching of hand inside the rain: If a young boy  or girl stretches his/her hands inside the rain, the God of thunder will command thunder to strike such person. So it advisable to keep your hands by your side while it is raining.

Nigeria indigenous are know to be superstitious in their dealings so they treat most of this mythical beliefs so dearly as to be free from it consequences.
