We bought a house in a village not far from the city, an hour and a half drive to the center. I came back late that day. We hadn't moved all our stuff out of the apartment yet, so I stopped by after work to pick some things up, and I ended up driving home at 1:00 in the morning.
I remember it was so quiet, so peaceful. It was late October, the first snow was falling in big flakes. I was driving along and admiring it!
Suddenly, I saw a figure in the headlights. Someone was walking along the highway. And I was already out of town. And it was about half an hour by car to our village, which was the closest! And on foot, it was a long walk!
And I felt so bad that I was about to drive by and not offer to help the man! I started to slow down. Judging by his figure, he was a young man. He was walking, not in a hurry. I couldn't see his face because of the hood. He stopped, I said:
- Where are you going? Get in, I'll give you a ride.
He looked at me and told me where he wanted to go. It turned out he was on his way to my village. Only he needed to go to the end, to the last street. So he sat down with me.
I didn't realize the strangeness at the time, but when I remembered later, I realized that I felt uncomfortable when he was there. An inexplicable sense of danger. His voice was soothing, though. Friendly... calm. And also, I never saw his eyes. I looked at him, though, and he kept his hood up, and the shadow was falling. And a couple of times it seemed to me that his eyes were all black, no whites... But then I thought it was just a game of shadows.
So, as we were driving along, I asked him how he dared to walk alone on the highway this late into the night. And he says that his grandmother is sick, she needs help. So he decided not to wait until morning and went, hoping that kind people would give him a lift.
We conversed, as we always do in such situations, about everything and nothing. Suddenly, we see another one coming! It's only a ten minute drive to the village! So my passenger says:
- Pull over, man! He's a relative of mine, let's go get him!
And I don't know why I stopped him. Just like in a dream, I say! I stopped near the man. And he sat right down, no questions asked! He looked like a decent-looking man, polite, and in his voice, older than my first passenger. But I was carrying them, and I got a chill on my skin! As if I was walking in front of a pack of wolves... Words can't describe it. And the man was also in a hood, I couldn't see his face!
But we calmly drove to the village, I even drove them further than my street, to the turnoff. On the way out, the second guy in the car held out a bill to me. I started to refuse, saying that I helped, I said, from the heart, and that it was unnecessary. And he tells me:
- Any service must be paid for. Take it, otherwise I will have to!
Having said that, he put the bill on the seat and got out. I looked after them as they turned into the alley and started to turn around. As I turned, I caught a glimpse of their footprints in the snow. They seemed strange to me then! My first thought was, "Why are the heels so clearly visible, but the rest of the foot is not imprinted?"
And then I thought, "Wait, what heels? They were wearing sneakers..." So, thinking about it, I drove home. There were no more oddities. Only... At the other end of the village, the dogs were howling a lot, so much so that my Beyashka started howling to them, too.
And then, a couple of days later, a neighbor told me that that night, when I dropped the men off, a grandmother died at the end of the village. I think she was a black witch. She did a lot of bad things to people! All night long, they say, the dogs were howling hard in the street. And the next day her relatives found her dead.
And those who came to help with the funeral said that there were many hoofprints in that grandmother's yard, as if cows were walking...
And the bill the man left me was a five-dollar bill. I put it into the glove compartment. And then, after my neighbor told me about it, I found it and looked at it. What surprised me was the number on the bill! It was my date of birth, in order! I couldn't believe my eyes! I know that such bills are usually kept as amulets. So I decided to keep them. I do not know if it's a coincidence or not, but after that, my business was so much better, that in my purse, bills smaller than five dollars do not happen! How is that possible? I don't understand it myself!
