Apple’s iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro series: The changes that are expected

The September 7 introduction of Apple's iPhone 14 is just six days away. Apple will host the iPhone 14 introduction in person, and a webcast of the event will be accessible to everyone. The new iPhones, the incoming Apple Watch Series 8, which will have a Pro version as well, the new AirPods Pro, and maybe a new iPad range will be the main topics of the event (unlikely). But the iPhone 14 series, which this time has a few tweaks, will be the centre of attention. Let's look at what these could turn out to be.

The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max/iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the four rumoured models in the series. It's true that the iPhone 14 mini won't be released this year.

Prices for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

You already know that the pricing will vary between the various iPhone 14 versions. There have been rumours of a price hike for the Pro versions, but it is still unknown if this will actually happen or if it would also affect the ordinary models.

It's expected that the iPhone 14 models will be priced similarly to the iPhone 13 variants if prices remain stable:

  • iPhone 14: From £779/$799
  • iPhone 14 Max/Plus: From £879/$899
  • iPhone 14 Pro: From £949/$999
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: From £1049/$1099

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro design

The notch at the top of the display is expected to remain on the regular Apple iPhone 14 models, which are anticipated to have a similar design to the iPhone 13 models. The iPhone 14 Max or iPhone 14 Plus will probably have the exact same appearance as the iPhone 14, only bigger.

  • iPhone 14/14 Max: Aluminium frame, dual camera, notch
  • iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max: Stainless steel frame, tripe camera, pill-shape cutout

Although the rear camera configuration may differ from the iPhone 13 models, we anticipate seeing twin lenses, flat corners, and an aluminium frame once more. Also to be anticipated is IP68 dust and water resistance.

The iPhone 14 Pro versions are anticipated to have a distinctive appearance from the regular iPhone 14 devices. According to rumours, they will ditch the notch that has been there since the iPhone X in 2017 and replace it with a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display paired with a punch hole camera. Though it is anticipated that when the display is on, this would seem as a broad pill-shape.

The iPhone 14 Pro versions are anticipated to be heavier than the ordinary models and to have a stainless steel frame rather than an aluminium one. They are also anticipated to include a triple rear camera on the back. The basic and Pro versions' colours will probably differ, while both are said to have a purple option.

Face ID should be available on each of the four models.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro display

  • iPhone 14: 6.1-inch, OLED, 120Hz refresh rate
  • iPhone 14 Max: 6.7-inch, OLED 120Hz refresh rate
  • iPhone 14 Pro: 6.1-inch, OLED, 1-120Hz refresh rate, Always On Display
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 6.7-inch, OLED, 1-120Hz refresh rate, Always On Display

According to rumours, the Apple iPhone 14 will maintain the same 6.1-inch screen size as the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 Max/Plus is anticipated to have a 6.7-inch display. While the iPhone 14 Pro Max is anticipated to have a 6.7-inch screen, the iPhone 14 Pro is also anticipated to include a 6.1-inch display. The OLED display, True Tone, Haptic Touch, and HDR support will presumably be shared by all four versions, however the ordinary and Pro models' resolutions are anticipated to vary, as they have in the past.

According to certain rumours, Apple's ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate will be available on the normal iPhone 14 models, much like it was on the iPhone 13 Pro models, albeit it might not be adaptable. The ProMotion adaptive refresh rate will undoubtedly be available on the iPhone 14 Pro models as well, however we could see a lower refresh rate than the iPhone 13 Pro models, possibly 1Hz.

Additionally, an Always On Display, which is a feature offered by the majority of Android phones that enables you to view information even when your screen is not on and unlocked, is anticipated in the iPhone 14 Pro models. What you now have on your iOS 16 Lock Screen will probably be mirrored by this.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro specs

  • iPhone 14/14 Max: A15 chip, 128GB/256GB/512GB storage, up to 19 hours/25 hours
  • iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max: A16 chip, 256GB/512GB/1TB storage, up to 22 hours/28 hours

Rumor has it that the A15 chipset, which powers the iPhone 13 small and iPhone 13, will also power the Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. Although rumours currently imply it will be the A15 once more, we wouldn't be shocked to see a modest performance boost and the chip being named the A15X or something.

The A16 processor, which is likely to power the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, will undoubtedly provide a performance improvement over the A15 and, consequently, the ordinary iPhone 14 models. Additionally, it will be the first time Apple has employed various processors in the same series of iPhone models.

It's not yet known if the storage options for the basic versions will be the same as those for the iPhone 13 variants because they haven't been specifically mentioned in leaks. If so, we may anticipate 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage choices. A 64GB variant was mentioned, but we don't think it will materialise. There are rumours that the iPhone 14 Pro variants will start at 256GB instead of 128GB, and it's anticipated that there will also be 256GB and 1TB editions.

Between the normal and Pro versions of the iPhone 14 as well as between the standard and Pro models themselves, the battery capacity will vary, with the Max variations undoubtedly having bigger batteries.

Based on the iPhone 13 models, we would anticipate the normal iPhone 14 to have a battery life of at least 19 hours and the iPhone 14 Pro to have a battery life of at least 22 hours. While the iPhone 14 Max will presumably last around 25 hours, the iPhone 14 Pro Max should provide at least 28 hours.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro cameras

  • iPhone 14/14 Max: Dual rear, upgraded front camera
  • iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max: Triple rear, upgraded front camera

The Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are anticipated to include a twin camera setup on the back. There are currently no information available regarding the sensors, however we may anticipate a primary wide camera and a secondary super wide camera. It's possible that these have dual 12-megapixel resolutions and are identical to the iPhone 13.

The triple rear camera on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, on the other hand, is anticipated to have a primary wide sensor, an ultra wide sensor, and a telephoto sensor. According to rumours, the primary sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro models would feature a resolution of 48 megapixels, an improvement above the 12-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 13 Pro and perhaps the iPhone 14 as well.

Similar features, such as Portrait Mode with Depth Control, Night Mode, Photographic Styles, and Cinematic Video, should be included across all four models.

But as usual, the iPhone 14 Pro versions will come with a few more capabilities in addition to the ordinary devices. This added a macro mode and a function called ProRES for the iPhone 13 models. What the iPhone 14 Pro models will offer over the basic iPhone 14 models is not yet apparent.

According to rumours, all four models will include a front camera that has been updated with a larger aperture and autofocus.

iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Pro software

iOS 16 will be compatible with all four of the anticipated Apple iPhone 14 models. About the only thing we can be confident about is that. As a result, the user experience will be essentially the same across the four variants, however, as we have noted, it's possible that the iPhone 14 Pro models could come with some extra camera functions.

In our separate piece, you can learn in detail about iOS 16 and the innovations that will be included.

Conclusion

According to the rumours, the basic iPhone 14 models and the iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to differ in a few areas, including design, materials, processor, storage choices, battery capacity, display features, and camera capabilities.

Still, we anticipate some similarities in terms of display sizes, front cameras, Face ID, flat corners, and the iOS 16 software experience. Overall, though, rumours indicate that this year, more than in the previous, the iPhone 14 Pro versions will set themselves apart from the normal models.

However, nothing has been verified as of yet, so we'll just have to wait and see what is said at the event. Prior to its announcement, you may read our features on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro rumours to keep yourself informed.
