Toyota returns to the top spot in car sales in the world in 2020, overtaking Volkswagen

Toyota's car sales in 2020 decreased by 10.5%, and including its subsidiaries - by 11.3%. At the same time, sales of all the company's cars outside of Japan decreased by 12.3% to 7.37 million units. While the German company is expected to temporarily surpass Toyota again in 2021, the Japanese manufacturer is projected by IHS Markit to advance every year until 2025. According to analyst Yoshiaki Kawano, Volkswagen's drive to produce more electrified cars should lead to a surge in sales in 2021, but prolonged lockouts and store closures in the domestic market will continue to have a negative impact.

Kavanaugh said Toyota will continue to post strong sales in its main markets in Japan and the U.S. In China, the world's largest car market, it should "fight hard," launching more electric cars and SUVs in line with local demand.
