Avoid These 7 Foods That Can Kill You

Danger lurks in the most unexpected places in the culinary world. Some meals, especially if they are prepared or ingested incorrectly, might cause serious health problems. Today, we'll discuss seven foods that, under the right conditions, can be deadly. This investigation was designed to raise consciousness about the hazards that may be hiding in your kitchen cupboards and encourage healthier eating habits.

Number One: Leafy Green Potatoes

Green potatoes are first on our list of things to eat. Solanine poisoning, which results from ingesting them, can induce nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and possibly problems with the nervous system. Solanine may be fatal in large doses, as suggested by research published in Toxicon and available through PubMed. To be safe, never eat a green potato and always remove the green skin before cooking.

Two, nutmeg

Popular in many cuisines throughout the world, nutmeg can be harmful if consumed in big quantities. Myristicin, one of its constituents, has been linked to hallucinations, convulsions, and even death when used in sufficient quantities. As little as 5g has been shown to be fatal to humans in a review article published in ISRN Toxicology. Because of this spice's potent flavour, it's important to use it sparingly.

Third, unroasted green cashews and almonds

Almonds and cashews, when consumed in their raw green state, can be extremely toxic. The cyanide present in bitter almonds is far more concentrated than in the cyanide found in the sweet almonds commonly sold in grocery shops. Urushiol, the poisonous component found in raw cashews, can cause severe skin rashes and can be fatal if ingested. Choose sweet or roasted types of these nuts instead of eating them raw.

4. Red Kidney Beans That Are Undercooked

Phytohaemagglutinin, a toxin found in uncooked red kidney beans, can induce severe stomach cramps and diarrhoea. In large enough doses, this can cause deadly vomiting and diarrhoea. Red kidney beans must be soaked for at least 5 hours and then boiled to destroy the toxin, as recommended by Food Standards Australia New Zealand. You should not slow boil these beans because doing so can enhance their toxic content.

Five. Brown Rice

Brown rice is up next; despite appearances, this "healthy" option should be avoided due to its high arsenic content. Arsenic exposure has been related to a number of health problems, including cancer, and a study published in Environmental Health Perspectives (available on PubMed Central) indicated that it could be caused by eating brown rice over an extended period of time. Therefore, you should eat a variety of grains and not only brown rice.

6. A Raw, Bleeding Hamburger

E. coli and other life-threatening food poisoning bacteria can be found in hamburgers that have been served undercooked or raw. Burgers should be cooked until the juices flow clear, as recommended by the UK's Food Standards Agency, to lessen the likelihood of E. coli contamination. Make sure the steak you eat is of excellent grade and well cooked to eliminate any risk of bacteria.

7. Cherry Pits

Finally, I'd like to mention that cherry pits can actually be pretty harmful. Ingestion of the chemical amygdalin in them can result in the production of cyanide. A case of cyanide poisoning caused by eating cherry pits is described in a study that has been published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology and is available on PubMed. To avoid choking or getting sick, cherry pits should be removed before eating.
