Battleground Mobile: The Best Strategy Game for Mobile Devices

Strategy is among the oldest game types in human history. Whether it’s chess, board games, or even some card games, we’ve been playing strategy games since long before there was ever a computer. Strategy games have come a long way, but the basic premise of using your brain to beat your opponents remains true even to this day.

Strategy Games A Brief History

It seems like every week a new strategy game comes out that revolutionizes the genre and becomes the new standard for the game industry. For the past 10 years we’ve seen the rise and fall of dozens of strategy titles that claimed to make you smarter, or at least more skilled at strategy. There were titles like “Thinker” that tried to change the way you approached a strategy game, or “Alchemic Masters” that tried to make you a better wizard. In recent years the “games-as-a-service” model has become incredibly popular, and has led to the rise of hundreds of new strategy titles each year. Some of these titles have been good and some have been garbage, but the important thing to remember is that they’re just different from regular mobile games.

There is one strategy game though, that has managed to stand the test of time and remain faithful to its roots, despite being released on every platform that has existed at one point or another, and is probably the closest thing we’ve got to a traditional, turn-based strategy game for the smartphone. When it comes to strategy games, there is really only one game that can claim to be the top. The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based, strategy game that can be played by up to six players (using a single game controller or via a wireless connection). Each player has their own agenda, which dictates how they play the game, and the objective of the game. However, it is up to the players to decide what kind of campaign to play.

The Gameplay

But there’s something about strategy games on mobile that really drives home how these types of games have become way more involved and complex than they used to be. The key to a great strategy game is a solid reward structure. There’s a lot of strategy involved in mobile strategy games, but the biggest difference is the time that is invested. While there are still cards and board games, the biggest difference is the overall content that is available. As you can see in the image above, the game doesn’t take long to get through. On top of that, you’ll never have a harder time winning a game.

Why Battleground Mobile?

With Battleground Mobile, we set out to do something a bit different. Instead of using a traditional RTS style of play, we wanted to focus on three pillars that will make each battle unique and fun: 1. Focusing on actual battles Instead of fighting large armies with gigantic armies, our players will have to focus on smaller battle maps. Battles will be limited to smaller skirmishes to simulate the real-life logistics of fighting a military battle in a multiplayer situation. You can see the difference between a skirmish map and a real-life military map with a fair amount of realism. 2. Turn-based gameplay We have created a turn-based battle system that you’ll be able to play anywhere.

Conclusion

Games are wonderful things, allowing us to escape reality, and playing them can give us a mental break from the real world. In this list, I hope to provide you with a list of some of the best strategy games for mobile devices. There are some great strategy games out there for other platforms such as PC and console, so feel free to check them out. I tried to provide an explanation as to why I have ranked the games I have, but feel free to let me know why you think that I should have listed a game that I didn’t. Since my favorite type of game is online, it was hard to consider the mobile games that I’ve included in this list because of latency.

Battleground Mobile for Android offers a solid version of the original turn-based strategy game that graced Windows PCs way back in the 90’s: Dune II. Battleground Mobile uses the same gameplay and interface as its Windows counterpart, which in itself is pretty impressive for a mobile port. The game itself has a fairly simplistic design, and doesn’t offer anything really new or unique, but I found myself playing the game pretty consistently and genuinely enjoying it. The game is pretty accessible, with a very simple and minimal tutorial and fairly simple instructions on how to play. Battleground Mobile feels very much like an in-development game, and it has a lot of room to grow.
