Best Family Movies (List)

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle

If you're tired of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man (although The Avengers is also quite the family movie), you can see how he gets along with the animals in the film about the famous Dr. Dolittle. Cute computer animals, Downey showing off his talent as a comedic actor, and the literary basis-the movie is based on a book by Hugh Lofting, which Korney Chukovsky carefully read before coming up with his Aibolit.

The Lion King.

In principle, in this selection could be any game version of the immortal cartoons of the studio "Disney" of recent years, and they have already accumulated a lot: "Aladdin", "Beauty and the Beast", "Cinderella", "Dumbo", "The Jungle Book". But the remake of "The Lion King" is a largely unprecedented case, first, because it features exclusively computer-generated beasts, and second, because it, like the original, has become an undisputed box office hit in 2019. So if you want to see "wilderness" with a "Shakespeare-like" plot, this is the one.

The Call of the Wild.

Jack London was, in fact, not only a great writer, but also a fierce animal advocate that many of today's eco-activists should learn from. His novel, The Call of the Ancestors, is about a friendly dog, Buck, who is taken by fate to cold and uninhabitable Alaska, gripped by a "gold rush." There he will become a sled dog, and get acquainted with the amazing man John Thornton, played in the movie by Harrison Ford. By the way, on the wave of interest in the works of Jack London on Netflix was released cartoon "White Fang" - a powerful animated story about the harsh life of half-dog half-wolf - "thundering Yukon".

Mary Poppins Returns

Recently, filmmakers have taken a serious interest in the legendary Umbrella Nanny. Not long ago, Hollywood made a film about the making of the classic '64 Disney musical Mary Poppins, showing how Walt Disney persuaded Pamela Travers to adapt her book. And this is the sequel to the original story from Rob Marshall. Mary Poppins returns to her former caregivers, who now have children of their own in need of care. Emily Blunt in her role is perfection itself, and the kids who are so lucky to have a nanny are in for a sea of adventures and attractions made with great imagination.

The Adventures of Remy

The adaptation of the novel "Without Family" by the famous French classic writer Hector Malot, about a boy Remy, who wanders through France in the company of a street musician, a monkey and a dog. Remy had to plunge early into the adult world, but he was lucky, his mentor being the eccentric, older Monsieur Vitalis, played by the brilliant Daniel Hauthoy. The adventurous story of how much two people can do for each other unfolds in the 19th century against a backdrop of spectacular pastoral and urban landscapes.

The Last Bogatyr

One of the best modern film fairy tales, created by the efforts of the Russian office of Disney Studios. According to the Soviet tradition, the roles of folk Russian characters here are played by honored domestic actors - Elena Yakovleva, Konstantin Lavronenko, Alexander Semchev and Sergey Burunov. In the story the usual guy from the capital Ivan is transferred into a fantastic country Belogorie, where magic - part of life, and conflicts are resolved with bogatyr swords and powerful sticks. And it turns out that he is there for a reason...

Ghost

Russian sparkling comedy, where on an equal footing then only novice actor Semyon Treskunov and experienced filmmaker Fyodor Bondarchuk. Here is a story of growing up, and school everyday life, and criminal-adventurous plot with a fair share of mysticism - yet the boy has a friendship with a real ghost. This picture started an active cooperation between Fyodor Bondarchuk and the studio "Hydrogen", which gave us "Attraction" and then "Invasion". And the same company also released "Ice 1.2" - also a serious bid for leadership.

The Adventures of Paddington

Paddington Bear in the blue coat and red hat was familiar to millions of children even before this film: the Michael Bond book series about him was the perfect way to engage a child in reading English. But it wasn't until this movie that it took on its full weight and 3D scope. There are many deep, truly humanistic thoughts embedded in this sweet tale of a bear cub from Peru who bravely sets out to find a new family in London. For example, about the importance of respecting other people's nationalities and supporting immigrants. Or that animals exist to live full lives, not to decorate museums with their stuffed animals, as the taxidermist played by Nicole Kidman thinks.

Belle and Sébastien

This surprisingly light and completely safe for the young psyche French film was made in 2013, but only appeared in the Russian box office in 2018. And it became an absolute hit in the category of "children's movies". The film instantly captivates with unparalleled landscapes of the Swiss Alps, where a boy tames a Pyrenean dog and gives it the nickname Belle. The creators added a little drama by placing the characters in World War II (in the original story by writer and actress Cecile Aubry, the action takes place in the 50s). A very therapeutic and kind film for the whole family, as if saturated with kindness, light and air.

Pelican

A wonderful, incredibly beautiful Franco-Greek film about the friendship between a boy and a pelican. A child finds a pelican chick and carefully nurtures it, but behind his attachment to the big and proud bird is a family drama - after his mother's death, his father is severely depressed and hardly notices his son. In the title "adult" role is the famous Serbian director, musician and hooligan Emir Kusturica, who is as peerless as ever. The film is based on Eric Buse's European bestseller "Nikostartos".

Living Steel

This movie is just made for boys and their fathers. And not only because it's about robot boxing, a brutal sport of the future where human-controlled iron giants step into the ring. The film's main characters are an ex-boxer and his son, who finds a discarded but hopeful robot named Atom - he's also, no joke, a full-fledged character in the film. The naive teenager believes his steel friend can become a champion, and the long-lost father (played by Hugh Jackman) at some point realizes he can't let down his son, who has a dream.

Alien

It's hard to believe today, but E.T. has for years been the highest-grossing movie of all time, something only super action movies can pull off today, but certainly not a quiet family movie with a cute humanoid puppet in the lead role. But this doll is special. E.T., a space baby lost on planet Earth and settled in the boy Eliot's family, proved to the world that not only wars can be stellar, but friendship, love and compassion as well. Humanist director Steven Spielberg has created a cinematic tale for years to come.
