Best games of 2021 according to readers and editors

This was not the year we were expecting - high-budget games failed to live up to expectations, sequels to popular series crumbled under the weight of their own ambitions. Amid this mess, all it took was a good game to make it shine in a very favorable light. And there really were a lot of "just good games. But which ones are worthy of being called the best? The readers and the editorial staff of 3DNews made their choice

Every year, on the eve of the New Year holidays, we collectively choose the best games of the past twelve months. We are very pleased that a lot of domestic projects were among the most worthy candidates in 2021. First and foremost we would like to mention "Black Book", a symbiosis between adventure and card strategy, and the "roguelike" Loop Hero. These games are world-famous, with no allowance for "usiness", a modest budget and the indie status of their creators. And these are not the only noteworthy Russian releases of the year - at least there is also King's Bounty II, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, ATOM RPG: Trudograd, and others.

Blockbusters were also plentiful, but they were not so easy. This pandemic year has not been easy, and games are no exception. Let's go over everything in order.

Readers' Choice

Voting among 3DNews readers, as usual, lasted exactly one week - from December 11 to December 18. Resident Evil Village immediately took the lead, and at first it seemed that no one could compete with it in the battle for first place - Forza Horizon 5, another great hit of this year, roared the engine at a safe distance of a few percent. But a couple of days later, a contender emerged that began to rapidly shorten the distance. Life is Strange: True Colors moved Playground Games' racing arcade, burst into the top 2 and methodically gained vote after vote. When the finish line appeared on the horizon, LiS came close to the competitor in the fight for the main trophy...

But the sequel to Capcom's horror series still held its own at the top. Who knows how the situation would have turned out if the voting had lasted a little longer than usual. Anyway, you made your choice - the game of the year according to the readers of 3DNews is Resident Evil Village! But the sequel to Capcom's horror series still held its own at the top. It is noteworthy that three places in the top 10 were taken by Xbox Game Studios projects and none by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The position of PlayStation in Russia has always been strong, but the pandemic broke the usual pattern - new consoles are not easy to find and very expensive to buy, the prices of games do not please the general public either. Meanwhile, Microsoft offered Game Pass and the affordable Xbox Series S, which, coupled with a systematic expansion to PC this year, made its projects available to a mass audience. And, of course, the fact that Forza Horizon 5 (3rd place in the ranking), Age of Empires IV (4th place) and Halo Infinite (9th place) are fascinating in their own right, without regard to the situation in Russia and the world helped.

Yes, yes, Age of Empires. Also ATOM RPG: Trudograd (7th) and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (8th). Three of the positions in the reader rankings are old-school representatives of old-school genres! Along with the great cooperative adventure It Takes Two (5th place) and the expectedly popular blockbusters Far Cry 6 (6th place) and Guardians of the Galaxy (10th place).
