Can Ronaldo Catch Up With Salah In The Race For The Premier League Golden Boot?

Despite a slow start to 2022, Cristiano Ronaldo put on what was arguably his best performance since returning to Old Trafford, scoring a stunning hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspurs as United laboured to a 3-2 win yesterday. His latest treble has now seen him gone passed Josef Bican to become the all time topscorer in football history.

For context, the 37 year old is currently on 807 career goals and 18 of those strikes have been scored for the Red contingent of Manchester in all competitions this season. Moreso, in the Premier league, Ronaldo has found the back of the net 12 times and is currently tied on second spot with the likes of Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota.

However, for a player who loves to win, the five time Ballon d'or winner would be looking to add another Premier league golden boot to his collection this campaign, but in order to do so, he must first catch up with Mohamed Salah who is the leading goalscorer with 20 strikes. With 9 more top flight games to go, the former Juventus talisman is facing an uphill task in the race for top spot as 8 goals separates him from the Egyptian.

Indeed, Salah is in a hot streak of form and doesn't look like taking the back seat anytime soon. To all intents and purposes, the golden boot is his to lose and the only way Ronaldo could catch up with him is if Salah were to be sidelined by injury. But as long as the Egyptian is on the pitch, he's bound to score and the more he scores, the lesser Ronaldo's chances of beating him.

Needful to say that It's been a season laden with plenty of lows for the Red Devils and even if Ronaldo were to finish as topscorer, it might mean nothing to him if his goals don't help Manchester United make the top four.
