Chinese astronauts will be able to control technology with their minds

Chinese scientists have developed a technology for controlling robotic equipment by recognizing brain activity. The control accuracy is impressive and available even without special training. In practice, the new technology will be implemented on a future Chinese orbital station, allowing taikonauts, for example, to control a huge robotic arm with the power of thought alone.

The details of the experiment remain classified. In general, we are talking about simulation, not control of real mechanisms. However, it is one step from simulation to real machinery, and it will be done soon.

In the experiment, 35 volunteers had to mentally control a segmented robotic arm. Of that number, 11 participants were immediately successful. It is important to note that 27 test subjects had no experience at all in operating such devices, but after a little training they were also able to control the mechanism with the highest accuracy.

The average accuracy of operations reached an unprecedented 99.07%. In all previous experiments of this kind, command accuracy ranged from 40% to 80%. People with no experience showed lower accuracy, but also at the highest level - 98.9%.

The Chinese researchers were able to achieve such a high result thanks to an elaborate system of strengthening brain activity in the right direction. For example, controlled segments of the manipulator flickered on the screen with different, but fixed frequencies. It is claimed that this helped synchronize brain activity with each segment of the robotic arm and identify the activating signal throughout the chaos of thoughts.

"In future space exploration, humans and machines will work together," the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. - Humans will no longer need to use a keyboard, mouse or even a joystick, but will be able to use their brains and eyes."
