Experience with the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro: Which is the better choice?

Let's start by going back a few years. Remember when Apple showed the iPhone XS and with it the iPhone XR? So began a time of sibling phones, where the older one got the best of everything, and the younger one was not so beautiful and desirable. A year later, we saw a pairing of the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 created along the same lines.

But that all changed last season: the iPhone 12 was so good that even the iPhone 12 Pro didn't look as confident against it. At the end of 2021, Apple released a new iPhone tandem: the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. Let's see how good the new "proshka" is, is it worth paying extra for it or is it better to stop at the basic iPhone 13.

I've walked around with these phones in turn and want to share my accumulated impressions. I hope they will help you when choosing a new one.

Is it lighter or heavier for you?

From the front, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro can't be distinguished at all - the phones are the same size with identical diagonals. If you look from the side or back, there are more differences. The different colors of the body, as well as the different number of camera modules - you can't confuse the Pro from the Pro if you want to.

When you take the phone in your hand, it feels fundamentally different. If the iPhone 13 Pro can be called massive and heavy, the iPhone 13, on the contrary, is light. The difference of 30 grams between them seems insignificant, but in practice it is very significant. Which one is better is a matter of personal preference. In my opinion, the iPhone 13 is more comfortable, but at the same time the iPhone 13 Pro gives the same moderately pleasant heaviness. It's solid, but not as heavy as its big brother, the 13 Pro Max.

The sides of the iPhone 13 are made of aluminum, but the iPhone 13 Pro has a steel frame. In practice, this translates not only in the different feel of the phone in the hand, but also in the way the phones get dirty. Shiny steel is more stain-resistant, while aluminum doesn't collect fingerprints. But if you wear your phone in a case, you won't notice any difference.

There are four colors to choose from for the iPhone 13 Pro, while the iPhone 13 has a slightly larger palette of five colors. Of course, the fashion for this season is set by the Pro series: Apple has bet on the soft blue color Sierra Blue. It looks different in real life: the color is not bright and calm, depending on the light it can be both gray and blue. Is the new shade beautiful? It is unlikely to remain in the memory like the legendary Jet Black, but it will do for a change.

Both models are IP68 waterproof and can stay up to six meters deep for half an hour.

Is there life without 120 Hz?

The screen sizes are the same: we get a diagonal of 6.1 inches with a resolution of 1170 × 2532 points, support for True Tone, HDR and DCI-P3. The cutout for the sensors in the new phones is smaller, this applies to both models.

But the iPhone 13 Pro has a larger maximum brightness margin: 1,000 nits versus 800 nits in the iPhone 13. This may not be such a critical difference. But ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate from 10 to 120 Hz is a very important point, it has never been in any iPhone before.

The difference against the basic 60 Hz in the iPhone 13 is palpable, and the technology is adapted so that it does not affect the battery life of the phone. It is true that so far there are problems with the software: it is possible to assess the super-smooth operation of the system on Apple applications. At the same time third-party software is not supported, but this will be fixed in future iOS updates.

Who is faster?

Both the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro have the new Apple A15 Bionic chipset. However, the iPhone 13 Pro has five-core graphics versus the iPhone 13's quad-core. Subjectively, the iPhone 13 is already very fast and it's not very clear how to find differences from the 13 Pro in performance.

The amount of RAM Apple has not advertised, but the 13 Pro has 6 GB of RAM, but the younger one has 4 GB. Again, in everyday use I did not notice a particular difference in speed.

The iPhone 13 can have 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of memory. In the case of the iPhone 13 Pro, in addition to these three versions we get a model with 1TB of memory. It's expensive, not everyone has so much memory in a laptop, but if you prefer to store everything in one place, then it's only a question of financial capacity.

More cameras

The front cameras are no different: everything is the same, the same 12 megapixels with the same aperture ratio. So we go straight to the other modules.

Both phones received a matrix shift stabilization system, just like the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Moreover, last year it was only in this iPhone, the younger iPhone 12 Pro did not have it. Now this type of stabilization has reached the "base" model - it appeared in both the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro.

Despite the similar resolution, all modules are 12 megapixels, but the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro have different cameras. The iPhone 13 Pro has better aperture and also has telezoom. Also, the iPhone 13 Pro can shoot macro, but the iPhone 13 is not trained for that. But don't forget that the new iPhones have a wide-angle camera with autofocus, so you can try to shoot macro with it. However, in this case you will have to zoom in on the objects with
