I was at Facebook for 6 years. I started becoming bored, demotivated, exhausted, and becoming less productive and scored a “Meets Most Expectations” on my performance review. This was fatal.
For starters. Everyone should hits a “Meets All Expectations”. It goes: “Meets None Expectations”, “Meets Most Expectations”, “Meets All Expectations”, “Exceeds Expectations”, “Redefines Expectations”.
I wanted to change teams to hopefully revitalize myself, find something interesting to work on. I was denied to change teams because of my past performance rating.
HR required me to go through a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP), to show that I can perform at my level again. I thought this was an insult. I’ve been here for 6 years, I know how to do my job. I just have no motivation or willpower. If I failed my PIP I was told that I would get terminated. I was also told that if I pass my PIP I can change teams.
Before the PIP began, I wondered if I can take my awarded “recharge”, a one month paid leave, awarded to employees for finishing 5 years at Facebook. HR denied this to me. I asked if I could take the recharge after finishing the PIP. Also denied.
Whilst reluctant to do the PIP, I still did it. Near the end, I was about to throw in the towel. On monday I told my manager I was going to resign, I had no more motivation in me left. He told me to send him a formal email. By wednesday I still hadn’t sent it in. I couldn’t do it.
6 years at Facebook. It has been a huge part of my life and identity. I didn’t want to just throw it all away. In the end I decided not to, and to complete the PIP.
I started exploring if I could take a break.
One month paid leave awarded for 5 year service. Denied
Unpaid leave? Denied.
If I left the company, would I have to do the full interview process again? Yes I would.
