Facebook's new name is Meta. This was announced by Mark Zuckerberg during the annual conference on immersive technologies Connect. It was held on October 28. You can watch the recording below.
The name Meta focuses on the construction of a "meta-universe. According to Zuckerberg's idea, this metaworld will be a digital world in which users will become avatars and all the content from the real world will be displayed as holograms. He noted that the main goal is to help people communicate and be there all the time.
For us, the meta-universe will come first, not Facebook. That means that over time, you won't need Facebook to use our other services
The rebranding also signals the tech giant's desire to be known not only in terms of the Facebook social network (and the problems forever associated with it, be it user data leaks or outages - the latter has made a lot of noise online), but also as a "home" for WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus and other assets.
Zuckerberg noted that only the name of the company is changing, the social network will remain the same - Facebook.
In addition to the name, a new logo was introduced. It is a blue ribbon of Mebius.
After the announcement about the company's rebranding, Facebook shares rose by almost 3%. This is evidenced by the trading data:
Facebook was not the first tech company to change its name as its ambitions expanded.
In 2015, Google, for example, reorganized itself entirely into the holding company Alphabet, in part as a sign that it was no longer just a search engine, but a sprawling conglomerate of companies making unmanned cars and medical technology. And startup Snapchat was renamed Snap Inc. in 2016, the same year it started calling itself a "carrier company" and debuted its first pair of Spectacles smart glasses.
