Fast & Furious 10 now has a release date: it's coming April 7, 2023 to cinemas worldwide. Universal Pictures announced Wednesday that the tenth and penultimate chapter of The Fast Saga — as the Fast & Furious franchise is now known — will arrive in less than two years. The April 2023 release date for Fast & Furious 10 returns the film series to Easter weekend, which has previously contributed to the financial success of its highest-grossing entry Furious 7 ($1.5 billion+) in 2015, though the death of Paul Walker and his posthumous appearance had a lot more to do with that.

That film, titled Fast & Furious 8, is written and directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), and stars Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood, Elsa Hernandez, and Charlize Theron.
Easter Weekend Traditionally Brings The Biggest Box Office Numbers
Speaking of which, the Fast & Furious movies have made an impressive impact at the box office, but April could be a tough time for them. It's a period of the year where they're often pushed to June or November. Easter Weekend, however, is an Easter weekend — and it's typically a time when audiences who won't normally see blockbusters go out to the cinema to take advantage of the reduced ticket prices. One of the main criticisms of Furious 7 was the absence of Paul Walker. The movie's original release date was April 3, 2015, but that was pushed back a week after Paul Walker's tragic death in a car crash in November. Furious 7 eventually had its release date pushed back even further to May 2, 2016 — so Easter weekend in 2016 is its highest-grossing release to date.
Why Fast 10's release date is important
As Universal explained, April 2019 is right on the heels of the April 2019 opening weekend for Star Wars Episode IX, the third and final chapter in the Skywalker saga. If Fast & Furious 10 doesn't open as well as expected (and remember, this is the first solo film in the franchise without Paul Walker) then the film's box office revenue could take a significant hit. And then there's Fast & Furious 9, set for release in April 2020, making the April 2019 date potentially pivotal. Here's what happens if Fast & Furious 9 falls apart: Universal could turn its sights to making Fast & Furious 10 in April 2020, or they could look to another full-on reboot of the Fast & Furious franchise: Fast Five, which hit theaters in 2011.
Fast & Furious 10 is expected to conclude the adventures of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) and Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) with new stars joining Diesel and Johnson, but it's unclear whether Walker's Scott Eastwood will be joining the crew. According to The Wrap, Universal is looking to incorporate Walker's character, who died in a tragic car crash on November 30, 2013, into Fast & Furious 10, either through hologram technology or by having Walker digitally re-appear in one of the film's new characters. If Walker's return is in any way possible, it will likely be a bittersweet affair for Fast & Furious devotees.
