So, here we go! The first, or rather, the zero day of the Russian Figure Skating Championship immediately brought surprises. To be more precise, it was Eteri Tutberidze who surprised us. In the morning her obviously scandalous interview on the "Let them talk" show was published in which she made harsh comments about her rivals and even some of her students, but at the same time, she showed her attitude towards many loud topics. Scandal does not necessarily mean something negative here, rather it explodes the accepted order. And originally the word in Greek meant "temptation.
Tutberidze's team couldn't resist one more temptation in the evening - to skip practice. "Let them rest," decided the main speaker of the day. This was an unheard of case for this group in recent years. Usually skaters like Trusova and Shcherbakova come out first and leave last, killing themselves, but they jump and skate - even when it is in theory harmful to health, as we saw in past Russian championships. Now it turned out that the skaters had the day off, and they could safely prepare for the draw, do their makeup, get their dogs and dresses ready for the walk and so on. Only the case of Alina Zagitova at the Russian Championships in Saransk in December 2018 comes to mind - then she was elementarily late to the city.
Training can be seen by everyone
Jubilee Palace has one great feature - the training rink is visible from the street. If you are an avid fan of Mikhail Kolyada/Elyzaveta Tuktamysheva/Sofia Samodurova/Matvei Vetlugin, you can see all their training. You go through the trees into the snowdrift next to the window and stand in it as long as you can. At minus 15 it's pure ecstasy mixed with catharsis.
But it is worth it. Lisa Tuktamysheva came out in the penultimate warm-up. And she had a very good workout. I couldn't see too well, because of the branches, but what she saw was quite enough to conclude that the oldest single player of the championship is in great shape. I counted about 10 triceps - all of them clean, including those in the stunt with a double toe loop. I had a mistake in the music part of the cascade, a double axel + oiler + triple salchow on the first jump, a single butterfly. But the Lutz and Rittberger went out like perfect slices of cheese from under the knife. Yes, Lisa traditionally took care of herself, on the lanes and spins she came to the edge, jokingly waving her arms. But this is absolutely normal for her training style.
And then the amazing began. At 5:55 p.m., the skaters were to enter the ice with Tutberidze's students. Kamila Valieva, Alexandra Trusova, Anna Shcherbakova, Maya Khromykh, Adelia Petrosyan - so the official list on the site of the Federation said. Only one girl (Veronika Yametova, the sixth in order) eventually made it. The situation was surreal: Yametova skated alone to the music of Valieva, Trusova, and so on. She must have had time to feel the depth of Daniil Gleichenhaus' taste. We're looking forward to the post-Olympic season at the Kristallny.
What it was - the two competition days of December 24 - 25 will show. In fact, even Daniel Gleichenhaus once told me that we should treat the training more calmly and not give them sacred importance. Certainly not the same as fans and journalists. I don't think an extra half hour would do much to change the balance of power. But the opponents can detect a hint of self-confidence. Will it encourage Alexei Nikolaevich and his charges?
