Genshin Impact: A Beginner's Guide to the Game

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play adventure Action RPG for PC, consoles and mobile devices that launched just a few days ago, but already feels like a hit. Inspired by Breath of the Wild, the novelty offers an expansive open world to explore, a fully voiced story and character collecting elements.

Genshin Impact also contains many secrets and features that are easy to miss. This guide will focus on those. Below you can find 9 tips to help you navigate the world of Teivat and unlock as many new characters as possible

Exploration is fun, but focus on the story as well

One of the big perks of Genshin Impact is its huge open world, full of hidden secrets, puzzles, mini-games, and bosses. It's clear that developer MiHoYo took inspiration from Nintendo's Breath of the Wild: you can climb mountains, jump and plan across chasms, lose track of time very quickly, bumping into all sorts of possibilities.

But Genshin Impact also has a full-fledged story campaign, which is worth going through first. It's necessary to do this because of the blocked features that are open only after completing certain missions and increasing the adventure rank (account level). For example, this unlocks the glider and even the co-op mode. Therefore, if you are tempted to constantly explore everything, it is better to try to combine travel and story missions.

Also, it is not recommended at first to use the system of fast movement on the map, if you are not sure that you have found all the secrets in the area. Hidden chests, materials for improvement, secret quests - they are everywhere and easy to miss.

You don't unlock all major features until the 20th rank of adventure

Development in Genshin Impact is quite slow. Because of this, it takes some time before you manage to unlock all the main features, but you shouldn't think too hard about pumping. The fact is that adventure rank experience grows from almost every action in the game.

Gradually you will unlock all the features of the game anyway. Below you can see a summary of the main elements that will give you RP:

RP 8: Arteries of the Land (sort of a world boss).

RP 12: More Arteries of the Earth and daily missions.

RP 14: Expeditions that allow you to send unused characters for resources.

RP 16: Cooperative multiplayer.

RP 20: Twisted Abyss, a large multi-story dungeon, and a combat pass for additional loot.

RP 22 and 27: More dungeons.

Unlock Lootboxes.

Genshin Impact uses a gacha system to get new characters and powerful weapons. This means that the game is heavily influenced by randomness. Even if you purchase Intertwined Fates or Destiny Encounters (we'll call them Lootboxes for convenience) and open them, the right character or equipment may not fall out. However, do not get too upset about this, because the game has a special mechanic.

So, after opening 10 loot boxes, you are guaranteed to get a four-star weapon or character. This is the second most powerful level (the first is five stars). The chance of getting four-star rewards is only 5%, so make the most of this mechanic. And after unlocking 90 pieces, you are guaranteed to get a five-star weapon or character (five-star rewards only have a 0.6 % chance of falling out).

Save your source stones and stardust for lootboxes

You can buy lootboxes in Genshin Impact with both real money and in-game currency. There are several types of in-game currency, including Source Stones, which are earned for almost all actions, and Stardust, which is earned for opening lootboxes. The in-game store will tempt you to spend in-game "money" on various items, but don't be tempted: save your Source Stones and Stardust to buy more Lootboxes with more valuable rewards.

Origin stones can be converted to loot boxes directly in the Prayer menu, but Stardust must be converted in the store menu, under "Purchased for Stardust". It's worth knowing that you can only buy five lootboxes of each type per month using Stardust.

9 Tips for Newcomers to Genshin Impact

Change characters often, especially in combat.

Genshin Impact uses a team of four characters that is formed by the player to fight. However, only one hero can be on the battlefield at all times, and the others are presented as replacements and can be switched to them at any time if necessary.

To fight effectively, you must assemble a squad, taking into account their abilities and belonging to the elements. There are a total of seven types of elemental damage in the game and many of them are combined. For example, if you direct the wind element skill through the fire, it turns into a fire vortex, a frost strike on the enemy doused with water will turn him into an ice flake and so on. For this reason, competent recruitment of characters in the squad and constant switching of them in battle will allow to reveal the combat potential of the team to the fullest extent.

To create devastating combos you can also use the Combat skill, which is similar to ultimates. Every hero has one, and when the time comes to use it, a special icon lights up next to the hero's name. To activate the Combat skill instantly, you need to use the Alt key + hero number.

Below you will find a handy table showing the combined effects of elemental damage:

Talk to every NPC

Most RPGs are crammed with unplayable NPCs wandering aimlessly through the world. That's not the case in Genshin Impact: many characters can give you a hidden quest or rare item after you talk. Therefore, it is worth talking to all characters when you meet them, especially if you have wandered somewhere in the middle of nowhere and there is not a soul around.

Spend all the original resin after getting

Free mobile games have greatly influenced Genshin Impact and brought more than just lootboxes to it. There's also a system that limits how often you can get rewards for certain actions. It's called Original Resin, and it's used to unlock flowers that appear after defeating certain bosses, or to complete challenges that are in the Adventure Book.

The primordial resin is regenerated gradually and in the initial stages it is worth using it every day. Otherwise, the maximum amount will accumulate and it will start to disappear for nothing. At higher levels it will need more, so there is a sense of economy. At the initial stages of it is not worth doing.

Make a mark on the map.

Teivat world is full of secrets, but sometimes you may come across a mystery that has no solution yet. You might need a certain elemental ability or better equipment, or maybe you just need to think. Whatever the reason for putting off solving it, you can mark the secret on the map and come back to it later when the time comes. You can also use marks for rare resources to continue collecting them after the respawn. A total of up to 99 tags are allowed.

Other things to know

Always stop to collect every amenokool in the vicinity. These collectibles can be traded with the Statue of Seven and boosted. In return, many rewards will be given, including extra stamina. The Statues of Seven are located all over the world and finding them is no problem.

Complete all of the mini-quests in the Adventure Book. This will give you plenty of resources and help make sure you don't forget an important goal. If you're stuck and don't know what to do, it's worth opening it.

A character using a two-handed sword breaks rocks faster. If you're going into mining, it's better to use such a character. Also, Amber's Baron Bunny ability destroys most ore veins almost instantly.

Develop the whole group evenly. Dungeons have level limits based on your group's average level.
