Hippy to Hipster: An Introduction to Subcultures

A subculture is a group of people who act, think or live in a way that's different from the rest of their society. Subcultures also give us a lot of new trends and ideas. Here are just a few famous subcultures you should know.

When people think of the '60s and '70s, they often think of hippies. This subculture began with young Americans being unhappy with society, and looking for a different way to live. Today, hippies around the world are known for long hair, clothes made from natural materials, and caring about the environment.

Hippies are about peace and love, but punks aren't afraid to get angry. Punk came from loud, political rock music in the '70s by bands like the Sex Pistols, The Clash and the Ramones. Punk style includes leather jackets, tattoos and crazy clothes and hair.

The first Goths were actually a Germanic group of people who fought the Roman Empire between the third and fifth centuries. However, in the '80s, goth started to mean someone who likes gothic rock music and wears a lot of black clothing, as well as clothes inspired by punk, Victorian and Edwardian styles.

Hipster is a subculture that began in the 2000s. This group includes people who like retro things, but also enjoy finding new food, clothes and music before everyone else likes them. Hipsters often wear vintage clothes, tight jeans, glasses even if they don't need them, and men often have beards and long hair.
