How to protect your dog from ixodid ticks and pyroplasmosis.

Every year thousands of dogs and other animals are attacked by ixodid ticks. That would be all right, blood and tears.

The scariest thing about this is that while the tick is drinking blood, it is carrying bacteria into the animal's body. These bacteria are called babesia and cause the serious disease pyroplasmosis (babesiosis). The disease is very severe, and if not treated in time can be fatal, even if the dog was saved, it is partially damaged liver. Each subsequent treatment becomes more and more difficult for her. Therefore it is very important to take care in advance to protect your friend from attacks by these parasites.

How and in what ways it will be possible to do this is described in this article.

Before you go somewhere with your dog, first it is advisable to find out to what extent the area is infested with ticks and if the situation is not favorable, it is better not to go there.

Even if the situation with the birth of animals from ticks is normal, you still need to beware.

Cynologists and veterinarians recommend using special sprays, drops, or chewable tablets. Now there are special vaccines from pyraplozmosis, but I personally do not recommend them, a lot of severe consequences and their effectiveness is inferior to the same pills.

Spray composition is different, there are sprays that scare away insects, and some that kill the moment the tick crawling around the animal looking for a place where it would suck. The action of chewable pills is based on killing the parasite at the moment when it drinks blood. Yes, it needs to bite the dog to die, but the infection does not occur.

Why doesn't infection occur?

The moment the animal is bitten, when the tick is just beginning to drink blood, the drug takes effect. It affects the nervous system of the tick, blocking it, and the tick stops eating, dies before it has time to infect the animal. According to veterinarians, experience shows that for the infection to happen it is necessary that the tick has been feeding for more than 24 hours. Chewable pills kill the tick in 8 hours.

But even all these measures cannot give one hundred percent safety from infection. Therefore, it is necessary to make it a habit on warm days (when the temperature is above zero) to examine your pet after the walk to find parasites. If the mite is removed, we must carefully monitor the condition of the dog for several weeks. At the first signs of illness, go to the veterinarian and tell him when the tick.

From myself.

When I go for a walk with my dog I take a regular perfume. Pour it on my paw and wipe my dog's paws. Ticks find their prey by the smell of sweat and can not tolerate harsh smells.
