Comrat was founded by settlers from the Ottoman Empire: Bulgarians, Gagauzians, Greeks, Jews and other nationalities.
In 1812 Bessarabia (together with Comrat) became part of Russia. In 1819 the second wave of immigrants from the Ottoman Empire came to Comrat. Comrat was part of Romania from 1918 to 1940. This year the title of the cultural capital of the CIS is held by the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, in 2022 this title will be given to the Kyrgyz city of Karakol.
