Comrat is the capital city of the Gagauz autonomy, the largest city in the Gagauz autonomy, a major transport hub, and a political, economic, cultural and scientific center of the Gagauz autonomy. The first documented mentioning of Comrat goes back to 1443, and the official mentioning of the city dates back to 1789.
Comrat was founded by settlers from the Ottoman Empire: Bulgarians, Gagauzians, Greeks, Jews and other nationalities.
In 1812 Bessarabia (together with Comrat) became part of Russia. In 1819 the second wave of immigrants from the Ottoman Empire came to Comrat. Comrat was part of Romania from 1918 to 1940. In 1940, Comrat (together with the entire Gagauzia) was joined to the USSR and became part of the Moldovan SSR. In 1995, following a decision of the population of Gagauzia, Comrat became the capital of the Gagauz autonomy, reports gagauzia. md.
As a reminder, Prime Minister of Moldova Natalia Gavrilita participated in the online meeting of the Council of the CIS Heads of State on October 15. The head of the cabinet stressed that Moldova values the ties within the commonwealth and intends to develop them. At the same time, according to Gavrilita, the free trade agreement with the European Union only makes Moldova more attractive to partners in the CIS.
It should be noted that since 2011 the CIS has been choosing cultural capitals. For this purpose, the national selection of cities for the right of receiving this status is carried out in the CIS member states. After that, the city's candidacy is submitted to the Council for Humanitarian Cooperation. The Council, in turn, submits a proposal to the Council of Heads of State, where they make a decision on declaring cities cultural capitals of the Commonwealth.
This year the title of the cultural capital of the CIS is held by the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe, in 2022 this title will be given to the Kyrgyz city of Karakol.
