In a defamation lawsuit, Johnny Depp accuses Amber Heard of encouraging confrontations and violence

Johnny Depp Trial

As he continued his testimony in the trial of the defamation action he filed against his former wife, Amber Heard, Johnny Depp accused her of inciting confrontations to satisfy a need for conflict.

Depp is suing Heard for an essay she published for The Washington Post in 2018, claiming she had become a "public figure symbolizing domestic abuse." Although Depp's name is not mentioned in the article, his lawyers claim it alludes to charges she made against him during their 2016 divorce.Depp claimed that Heard was the one who started their conflicts and occasionally escalated them to physical violence during his morning testimony.

Depp explained, "It wasn't meant to help the relationship; it was meant to fulfill her craving for confrontation."

"She has a strong desire for conflict and violence. It suddenly appears out of nowhere.

"Heard would start fights and intensify them with degrading language, according to Depp's description of their relationship. He also said that she would "strike out" on occasion, whether with a slap, a shove, or by throwing something at him.

"It's hard to understand," Depp added, "but the dispute would start here and then spiral out of control."

"You'd start over... It's now even more heightened, and it's still circular, with no entrance or exit. Heard claimed she only hit Depp in self-defense or in defense of her younger sister in court files before the trial.

In a follow-up to his Tuesday evidence, Depp said he would frequently walk away from their disagreements since it was a method he learnt as a child. His mother was physically and verbally violent, he told the court the day before, and his father would often suffer through it silently until he eventually left his wife when Depp was a teenager.

The trial, which will take place in Fairfax County, Virginia, is scheduled to last several weeks. Because The Washington Post's online editions are published through servers in the county, a Fairfax judge ruled in 2019 that Depp was within his rights to file the lawsuit there.

On Wednesday, Depp's evidence was interrupted for a morning recess, after which Heard's attorneys are anticipated to start cross-examining him.

In May 2016, Heard was given a protective order after she claimed Depp had smacked her in the face with a telephone. She said in court that he continuously grabbed her hair, yelled at her, and beat her, offering evidence in the form of a photo of a bruise on her face.

In a sworn affidavit at the time, Heard stated, "Throughout the length of our relationship, Johnny Depp has been verbally and physically abusive to me."

She also revealed that she was terrified of Depp, claiming that he had a "quick fuse" and tormented her.

Depp has refuted the claims, claiming that he was never "out of control."
