In just four years, the Google Play Store has lost one million apps... What exactly is going on?

The most crucial factor is quality rather than quantity. This is how Google should view its Play Store, which has undergone a major overhaul in the last four years. In reality, about a million apps vanished during this time, but that isn't the only drawback.

While it is true that customers are missing out on alternatives, it is encouraging to learn that the Google-banned apps may constitute a security and privacy concern. Let's look at where this information originates from and what happens on the Google Play Store as a result of the decrease in available apps. According to a survey by Tradingplatforms, the Google Play Store now has considerably less apps than it had four years ago. In March 2018, there were 3.6 million open applications, but by March 2022, that number had dropped to 2.6 million.

Taking this data into account, the Google Play Store saw a 26% drop in the number of apps it offers to its users. However, this is not a negative, because those who disappeared did not respect the rules for using the platform. Specifically, they did not respect the security or privacy of users. Once developers don't comply with the usage rules, Google is responsible for removing their app, which is no longer available in the Google Play Store. So the disappearance of a million apps over the past four years has a clear explanation: those apps did not meet the platform's requirements and were dangerous for users.

Yet even with the decrease in the number of apps, the Google Play Shop remains the store with the most apps, with 2.6 million, as we previously stated. The App Store, which has 2.3 million apps, is the driving force behind it.
