Israel has recorded its first case of two mixed illnesses, influenza and the coronavirus, dubbed Flurona. In this report on Flurona, it is said that the patient is a young pregnant woman, who is in the hospital, and has mild symptoms.
"She was diagnosed with flu and coronavirus as soon as she arrived," said Arnon Vizhnitser, director of the gynecology department of Beilinson Hospital in the city of Petah Tikva.
"Both tests came back positive, even after we checked them again."
He continued that the two diseases he suffered from both caused shortness of breath because they attacked the same part, namely the upper respiratory tract. The Israeli Ministry of Health reported that they are currently studying the Flurona case, with the aim of determining whether the combination of these two infections can cause a more serious illness. Meanwhile, the pregnant woman is expected to be discharged from next Thursday. Despite being the first documented case, with the two respiratory illnesses concurrently, doctors believe there are more cases in Israel.
“We are seeing more and more pregnant women with the flu. It's definitely a huge challenge dealing with a woman who comes in with a fever during childbirth," said Prof Vizhnitser.
“This is especially when you don't know if it's the coronavirus or the flu, so you call it the same. Most of the disease is respiratory," he added.
Furthermore, the Israeli government itself started administering a fourth vaccine to individuals with compromised immune systems, to curb the rate of increase in cases of the Omicron variant. Israel lifted its policy of using masks outdoors in April, enforced only during large gatherings, and positive cases continue to rise. Health ministry data showed that 5,000 cases were recorded as of Friday. In addition, there have been 1,376,256 infected cases and 8,243 coronavirus-related deaths reported in Israel since the pandemic began. On Thursday, the head of the army's coronavirus task force warned that the healthcare system would collapse if the Omicron variant spreads widely.
