In Kenya upto 2021 (before introducing CBC system which is being incorporated )they used a system known as 8 4 4 system.
Before you join the 8 system which is from standard 1 to 8 you had to pass through nursery school for 3 yrs .
The nursery school comprises of three year learning.
When you graduate from nursery school you can then join standard 1 and learn for 8 years until standard 8.
The system is based on books and when u reach standard 8 you are prepared to do you graduating exam for the 8 years before you join High school.
The graduating exam is called Kenya certificate of primary school (KCPE) .The subjects done in primary school are : English, Kiswahili, science, social studies, mathematics.
The candidate are required to prepare adequately because the results will determine the type of high school ( also known as secondary school in Kenya) they will join.
The high schools are divided into:
1 National high school
2 County high school
3 Provincial high school
4 Day High school
The total marks done was 500 and a student was required to get atleast 390 to gain access to a national high school.
When a student gets 200 and below most of them are sent to Day school.
When the Kenya certificate of primary education is out the ministry of education announces them before each student can access their results and know their fate.
After the results are out the Government now places each student in their respective high schools according to their selection and their marks.
Then the students are prepared for high school education. The high school education is for 4 years namely from form 1 to form 4. The subjects done in high school varied with the high school that the student joins .
Some high schools even offer foreign languages lessons and home science. The average number of subjects done is 14. However when the student reaches form 2 end year or from 3 beginning year according to high schools they are required to drop some subjects that they don't want and be left with a minimum of 8 subjects.
The most subjects done in high school are : mathematics, English, Kiswahili, physics, chemistry, Biology, Agriculture, History,Home science, Business studies,Geography, Religious education (Christian religious education or Islamic religious education ) and different foreign languages like French, Spanish,Germany and Italian among many.
When the student is in form 3 they start doing literature in English and Kiswahili where the student read different novels and find their deep meanings.
Hence now the final year is form 4 when the student is required to prepare for Kenya certificate of secondary education (KCSE) . That exam is crucial more than the KCPE because it will determine the students future. It will determine whether the student will do their dream career or not.
KCSE is graded from A to E . A being the maximum grade. In Kenya for a student to join the university they need to have atleast a minimum of grade C+.
The higher education schools are:
1 University
2 college
3 Technical schools
Those who are lucky to join University can do degrees for 4 years. In college on diploma is done for 3 yrs and also certificate courses. In technical schools certificate and diploma is also done . Certificate courses can be done for minimum of 6 months to 1 year.
At the end of it all every student has to pass through that system. Personally I did and it's not a walk on the park.
