Lack of sleep can have serious consequences for work

Physicians and public health experts say that if a person does not get the right amount of sleep on a regular basis, he may suffer from constant physical and mental problems which can lead to ruin of a beautiful life.

Prof. Dr. Manilal Ich Litu, General Secretary of Bangladesh Association of Surgeons for Sleep Apia, says that global research has shown that 45-50% of people are suffering from sleep problems at this time of Corona epidemic which is causing various problems including depression.

"Experts say there is a sleep epidemic nowThey cite Corona as losing jobs, worrying about income, the Blue Light effect (response to children's mobile or device use), increased domestic violence and anxiety at work, corona panic, alcoholism and smoking.

However, there has not been much research on sleep in Bangladesh, so there is no information about how many people in the country suffer from insomnia and its causes.

Manilal Aich Litu says that one of the major causes of sleep problems in Bangladesh is lack of proper 'sleep culture', i.e. lack of common habit of going to bed after eating dinner on time.

"Most people here are not accustomed to having dinner and going to bedIt's also a major cause of sleep problems. "

For all these reasons, today, on World Sleep Day, importance is being given to regular sleep. The theme for this day is "Regular Sleep: Healthy Future".

The World Sleep Day Committee of the World Association of Sleep Medicine celebrates the day on the third Friday of March every year and its main purpose is to inform people about the physical and mental damage caused by lack of sleep.

What does it mean to not sleep regularly?

Mahbuba Mithu, a housewife in Dhaka, says she gets an average of 4/5 hours of sleep a day to take care of household chores and children.

"What can I do, baby? I can't sleep if I want to. I have to wake up again and again for the baby when I go to sleep after work all day.As a result, it is impossible for me to sleep 7/8 hours deep, "he told BBC Bangla.

Dr. Sharmeen Yasmeen says that if one cannot get regular sleep for at least six hours, even if it is not eight hours, then it is a problem of sleep or irregular sleep.

"And if the problem is regular, it can have a devastating effect on life.It also has an effect on work. Because it distracts, creates various neurological problems including blood pressure.

What can happen if you do not sleep

Lack of sleep can lead to various physical problems. A review of 153 studies around the world found that sleep deprivation was linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. These studies have been conducted on about 5 million people.

Studies have shown that lack of sleep for several consecutive nights can lead to diabetes. This type of insomnia reduces the body's ability to control blood glucose levels.

Dr. Manilal Ich Litu says that if one does not get proper sleep regularly for three months, the risk of premature death, heart attack and stroke increases ten times.

"Late sleep or lack of sleep leads to panic, phobia (fear) and phantom pain (unreasonable discomfort) which leads to depression and anxietyAnd because of the lack of sleep culture among the people of Bangladesh, the incidence of sleep problems is increasing, "he says.

Public health expert Dr. Mushtaq Hossain says, "Regular sleep at the right level reaches the highest level of immunity in the bodyRegular sleep disturbances or insomnia can lead to serious physical and mental problems for a person,

Another public health expert, Dr. Sharmin Yasmin, says that sleep deprivation can lead to physical problems as well as endanger a person's professional life.

"Lack of sleep can have serious consequences for work, because lack of sleep can reduce the ability to concentrateIt's hard to do things that are normal, "he said.

"Work will be affected. Attention will be lost. Neurological problems will be created. Mental instability will occur. So at least 4/5 hours a day, sound sleep is important," he said.

He said that the mental problems arising from this sleep problem can ruin the happiness and peace of the family.

And to stay free from these problems, Dr. Manilal Ich Litu has emphasized on the habit of sleeping properly on a regular basis.
