Media reported the detention of more than 40 people at protests in Istanbul

Istanbul police used force against protesters against rising inflation, more than 40 people were detained, according to Duvar portal.

It is noted that police used water cannons against protesters chanting slogans demanding the resignation of the government in Istanbul's Kadikoy district. Protesters also gathered in the Avcılar and Bakırköy districts of Istanbul. The police blocked the square where the rally was to take place and demanded that the protesters disperse, saying that the district administration had imposed a one-month ban on the rallies.

 

Earlier on Wednesday, Turkey's General Directorate of Security reported that criminal cases were opened in connection with calls on social networks for street protests due to the plummeting value of the lira.

 

Protests were held in Istanbul, Ankara and several other Turkish cities on Tuesday evening following the collapse of the Turkish lira. Protesters shouted slogans demanding the resignation of the government and the removal of the ruling Justice and Development Party from power. Police took action to disperse the protesters

The Turkish currency set a new anti-record on Tuesday, falling from 11.37 to 13.21 lira per dollar. Turkish financial analyst Arda Tunca told RIA Novosti that the one-day drop is the biggest in the last 20 years. It came after the Turkish central bank decided last Thursday to reduce the discount rate to 15% from 16%, and on Monday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan spoke out again in a televised address in favor of lowering the discount rate.
