Armenia told about situation on border with Azerbaijan

Armenian Defense Ministry: Azerbaijani servicemen opened fire, but now the situation is calm

Azerbaijani military opened indiscriminate fire on the northern section of the border the night before, the Armenian Defense Ministry said.

"The fire was ceased by retaliatory actions. As of November 18, the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border is relatively stable," the ministry noted.

Baku, in its turn, accused Yerevan of shelling its positions.

Clashes continued on the next day. Secretary of Armenia's Security Council Armen Grigoryan called on Russia to help protect the country's territorial integrity in accordance with the 1997 treaty.

After Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu spoke to his counterparts in Baku and Yerevan, the fighting stopped.

Relations between the two republics remain tense, primarily because of the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh. Last fall, another round of military confrontation ended with an agreement beneficial to Azerbaijan: Armenia returned the Kelbajar, Lachin and Agdam districts; Russian peacekeepers were stationed in the region.
