Moon bin's Mental Health And Us

Moon bin’s Mental Health

Moon Bin, was a famous 25-year-old K-pop star of the boy band group Astro who was reportedly found dead in his apartment in the Gangnam neighborhood of Seoul on April 19th, 2023. His death is expected as a suicide case as there is no denying how much pressure these celebrities experience from a young age.

His last interviews are now being re-examined thoroughly, to understand the nature of the troubles he was going through – drawing more regret and remorse from the fans and the K-pop industry. When asked, “If you were an angel and you could do one good thing, what would you do?” Moon bin replied, “I want to give another chance to people who made extreme choices.” He added, “I have looked back and wondered, ‘Where did things go wrong?’ so many times.” There is much more if one looks deeper in the meanings.

There are many celebrities who are bearing the burdens and pressure of exporting Korean culture to the rest of the world – which is a major contributing factor that pushes the artists to their limits. Suicide in the K-pop community have gotten much more attention in recent years. Thanks to some celebrities who have bravely talked about their mental health, raising awareness about it. For example, Suga (BTS), RM (BTS), Bae Suzy (Miss A), and others.

Now after Moon bin’s death, mental health is an equally important and sensitive subject to talk about. It is because it is very real when it has severe impacts not only on the person who commits suicide and his/ her family members, but for the people around them who get an impact from it. And when it comes to the entertainment industry, where millions of fans are following their celebrities, the fans are also getting influence from such events. Their emotions get affected, which influences the daily life. As stated by Marc Brackett, Ph.D., “The three most important aspects of learning – attention, focus, and memory – are all controlled by our emotions, not cognition.” This defines that the young Korean generation is under the looming affects of distress and discomfort. As what high standards of beauty and other things they view, believe, and follow (just like their idols) are difficult to uphold, making life more difficult to lead to optimistic and progressive manner.

Suicide is the fifth leading cause of death in South Korea, as reported by Statistics Korea in 2019, and South Korea had the highest suicide rate for the period 2003 to 2009. And this trend is more pronounced in the younger population. The report added that suicide is the first and second leading cause of death in people aged 10—39 years. It prompts us to take suicide as a public health priority and examine various factors that may contribute towards suicide.

A handsome young lad of 25-years, who had money and fame, health and status, for what people wish in their lives, just commit suicide is hard to believe. It is alarming not for Korean society, but for other societies who follow hard rules related to beauty, skills, talents, fame, societal image, money standards, etc. Just make your life simple enough for yourself to lead a happy life. When a person pushes his/ her limits to meet the definition of how others define something, at that very point things start getting messy and troublesome to be bearable.
