I received from a friend that I should wear something light and airy. The brutally hot, humid air made me all the more appreciative of the tips when I got to Minnesota.
The heat makes the beauty queens' famous butter sculptures all the more remarkable - you know, they won't last long outside of the 0-degree cold of the Dairy Building where they're kept sculpt. There, the finalists for the Princess Kay of the Milky Way contest (a contest for women who lived or worked on dairy farms) sat for six to eight hours to get a portrait of her. they were sculpted by Linda Christensen, who has been sculpting at the fair since 1972.
Contest finalist Rebekka Paskewitz flashed a big smile as she sat down for her sculpture, and then as she waved to her adoring fans. I learned that two of her cousins had been named Princess Kay as finalists and that the family planned to photograph the pageant queens with three of their sculptures after the fair. The freezer space should also work in the home.
The milk shows are far from the only ones at the Minnesota State Fair. I've seen men in plaids compete in events like ax throwing, sprinting and skateboarding at the Timberworks Lumberjack show. I admired the giant pumpkins in the giant pumpkin contest (the winner weighed 1,108 pounds) and Christmas tree number 1 , whose needle retention, scent, and conifer shape make it a The fan favorite tree in the Christmas tree contest. I spent a disproportionate amount of time watching visitors slide down a giant 170-foot rainbow-colored slide.
A sow is giving birth to a litter of piglets. There was a man using a pliers-like tool to pluck a stuck piglet as the crowd watched eagerly in the stands.
This particular piglet managed to survive, if bloodshed, but the next one was stillborn and immediately carried away in a plastic bag. My only consolation was a little boy asking a laboring pig, "Why are we looking at the ass?"
Looking for something a little lighter, I took the 360 degree Sky Flyer tour and booked a round trip ticket on the SkyGlider Chairlift. At the top of the fairgrounds offers half an hour of peace - and sweeping views of all the snacks.
The real purpose of the fair, as I understand it now, is to eat all day.
I started with the Pronto Pup - basically a corn dog made with pancake batter - and from there came the Mouth Trap Cheese Curd; fried apple I received from a friend that I should wear something light and airy. ,At one point, I heard a boy scream exactly what we were feeling. see: grab some cookies and go home! It was a long day for everyone: the driving engineer, the butter model, the sow, the corn fryer and the baker. So, after getting the bucket from Sweet Martha, I go home to rest - and digest topped with cinnamon cream; a pushpop of frozen cider; freshly squeezed lemon juice; and a First Kiss apple, a new variety developed at the University of Minnesota, similar to Honeycrisp but ripe a month earlier
