A new strain of corona virus B.1.1.1.529 has been found in South Africa. It is believed that it is deadlier than all the strains of Corona found so far.
This strain is also named Omicron. The variant was identified by the Network for Genomics Surveillance in South Africa (NGS-SA) on Monday.
The World Health Organization (WHO) held an emergency meeting on Friday regarding this. The organization has considered it a ‘Variants of Concern’. This means that this form of SARS-Co-2 is fatal and worrisome.
The WHO said that preliminary indications suggest that this form of corona is highly contagious. It is more permeable than the delta variant by far the deadliest form and current vaccines may be less effective against it.
Scientists believe that B.1.1529 has multiple spike protein mutations and preliminary analysis suggests it is highly contagious. South Africa has registered a four-fold increase in new cases in the past two weeks.
What is the WHO assessment?
The WHO said on Friday that its technical advisory group met to review the new version and designated it as a variant of concern, the Indian Express reported.
What are the symptoms of the new strain B.1.1.529 or Omicron of Corona?
South Africa’s National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) states that there are currently ‘no unusual symptoms’ observed after infection with type B.1.1.1.529. It is being told that its symptoms are similar to other infectious strains like Delta and some people do not feel its symptoms.
How will scientists determine vaccine effectiveness and disease severity?
Scientists have not yet reached any specific conclusion regarding Omicron. However, South Africa has begun to investigate the immunodeficiency of B.1.1.529 in a laboratory setting.
It has also established a real-time system to monitor hospitalization and outcomes associated with B.1.1. The data will reveal whether the mutation is associated with disease severity, or whether it may affect the performance of therapeutic drugs being administered in hospitals.
What should be done to avoid the new form of corona?
All expert bodies have emphasized that vaccination is important for protection against any strain of corona. This can reduce the risk of hospitalization and death.
Real-time data has shown that vaccination rates also significantly reduce the pressure on health systems. The emergence of the new version once again shows that the pandemic is not over.
The only advice from experts right now is to continue to follow the rules related to COVID, such as masking, social distancing, good ventilation in all shared spaces and washing or sanitizing hands and surfaces, to break the chain of the virus.
Facts related to new strain B.1.1.1.529 of Corona
– The version b.1.1.1.529 has a total of 50 mutations, including over 30 mutations on the spike protein alone. The spike protein is the target of most current COVID-19 vaccines and is what the virus uses to unlock access to the body’s cells. Researchers are still trying to confirm whether this makes it more transmissible or lethal than earlier variants.
WHO has said that we do not know about it yet. We do know that there has been a lot of genetic variation in this form. And when it takes many forms, there is concern about how this will affect the behavior of the COVID-19 virus.
He said that researchers are trying to understand together what these changes and spike proteins are called and what can be their detection method, treatment and vaccine.
For the first time this week, this strain was identified in South Africa. It has spread to nearby countries, including Botswana, where fully vaccinated people have become infected. South Africa has seen more than 100 cases, with four more in Botswana.
– Two cases have been detected in Hong Kong – where travelers from parts of southern Africa (who got the Pfizer jab) were kept in separate rooms.
– Israel has confirmed its first case of infection by version B.1.1.1.529; The traveler was returning from the African country of Malawi. It is being told that there are two other samples marked as “probable” at this time.
The World Health Organization has called for caution in the initial stages of dealing with this type. The organization states that more research needs to be done to understand how B.1.1.1.529.
