Omicron's New Symptoms: Diarrhea

A new symptom of omicron, one of the variants of Covid-19, is severe diarrhea that patients can experience when exposed to this virus.

According to the CDC, diarrhea can be a sign that a person has been exposed to the omicron variant. People with weakened immune systems are the most likely to experience diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Johns Hopkins Medicine shows about 20 percent of patients tend to experience diarrhea as a symptom that appears after being infected with the virus. The omicron variant is also referred to as the spreadable variant. Even now there are more than 700 people who have been exposed to omicron in Indonesia since it was discovered last December. Symptoms of omicron are more difficult to identify because they mix with symptoms of other seasonal illnesses such as the flu or the common cold. However, a series of studies have shown that although they spread easily, omicron is actually lighter than other types. This is evident from data that reveal the risk of hospitalization is 50 to 70 percent lower than the delta variant that emerged in 2021. Diarrhea is not the only symptom that can appear when someone is exposed to this variant. There is a new set of omicron symptoms. Here are the symptoms.

1. Fever or chills

2. Cough

3. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

4. Fatigue

5. Muscle or body pain

6. Headache

7. Stuffy nose or runny nose

8. Nausea or vomiting

9. Diarrhea

Currently, the NHS advises that anyone with mild Omicron symptoms should:

1. Do a PCR test (a test sent to a lab) to check if you have COVID-19 as soon as possible.

2. Stay home and no visitors (self-isolate) until you get your test results and only leave your home to do the test.

3. Check if the person you live with needs to self-isolate.

4. You can leave the isolation room to get medical attention or to avoid danger in cases such as domestic violence.

5. People with signs of Omicron infection may leave isolation after seven days if their test results are negative on the sixth and seventh days after starting the isolation.

6. On the other hand, if the test result is positive, you must continue to self-isolate for the full 10-day period.
