On the eve of the start of sales of the iPhone 13 line, Western reviewers published a review of the senior model of the line - iPhone 13 Pro. According to journalists, the new device is one of the best smartphones you can buy today.

Design

Externally, the iPhone 13 Pro looks almost identical to the iPhone 12 Pro, except for two key differences: a larger camera protrusion and a smaller notch. The former is pretty obvious. The lenses and the square block around them protrude quite noticeably - the smartphone is far from flat when you put it on the table. The "notch" is about 20% smaller than that of its predecessor. The difference is obvious when you compare the new smartphone with the iPhone 12 Pro.

The stainless steel frame gives the iPhone 13 Pro some serious weight. The device seems heavier and more durable than its predecessor. The weight of the new product is 203 grams, while the iPhone 12 Pro has 189 grams. Since the design of the iPhone 13 Pro is largely unchanged, it looks more like an iterative upgrade over its predecessor.

Display

The iPhone 13 Pro gets the same size OLED screen as its predecessor, 6.1 inches diagonally. Apple calls the new screen Super Retina XDR. The colors of the display are bright, contrast, and viewing angles are excellent. Maximum brightness is 1,024 nits, which is much higher than the iPhone 12 Pro's 742 nits.

The main innovation of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max is the 120 Hz display refresh rate. The ProMotion experience is really good. The iPhone 13 Pro's display can automatically switch between 10 Hz and 120 Hz, offering a smooth experience that adapts not only to the content on the screen, but also to how quickly the user swipes their finger across the glass.

Cameras

The iPhone 13 Pro has a triple main camera with three 12-megapixel lenses, including a 77mm telephoto lens with a 3x optical zoom. This year's main sensor has a larger sensor and a wider f/1.5 aperture, so it can let in more light than before.

The 120° ultra-wide-angle sensor is also larger and gets autofocus. The iPhone 13 Pro stands out in low-light conditions, especially compared to its predecessor and competitors. According to many reviewers, there is no other smartphone on the market that can match the iPhone 13 Pro in terms of photo quality.

It's worth noting that the camera systems on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are identical, which means you don't need to buy a larger, more expensive smartphone to get better photos.

In terms of the quality of images taken on the iPhone 13 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus, without a doubt, the "apple" gadget won. The Korean manufacturer's flagship produced a surprisingly blurry image, as if the smartphone was struggling to compensate for sunlight. The focus on the iPhone was sharper and the contrast was stronger.

The shot taken indoors showed great natural light and more color variation. The iPhone 13 Pro captured the fall colors almost perfectly.

When testing the ultra-wide-angle lens, the iPhone 13 Pro took a good picture with natural color balance, proper exposure and sharp focus. The Galaxy S21 Plus did the typical Samsung thing of oversaturating colors. When shooting with a telephoto lens, the photo of the S21 Plus turned out better, but the colors were not as vivid as those of the iPhone 13 Pro.

In portrait photography, the iPhone 13 Pro performed a bokeh effect with sharper edges. Of the minuses, it's worth noting the beauty filter, which by default in the iPhone 13 Pro "flattens" the faces too much.

Also worth noting is the Cinematic Mode, which is analogous to the portrait mode when shooting video. Cinematic Mode allows you to automatically switch the focus from foreground to background. Moreover, Cinematic Mode works with both the main camera and the front camera. However, there are some restrictions: the maximum video resolution in this mode is Full HD, and the mode does not work in low light conditions.

Reviewers said that the Cinematic Mode looks more like entertainment for regular users and is unlikely to be useful for real professional video work.

Performance

"The "heart" of the iPhone 13 Pro is the 5nm Apple A15 Bionic processor, which includes six cores: two high-performance and four energy-efficient. Complementing the chipset is 6GB of RAM.

According to Apple, the new processor is 50% faster than the competition (probably referring to the Snapdragon 888 and its Adreno 660 graphics processor). It's hard to measure performance in actual games, since iOS doesn't allow you to track frame rates in games, but more intense titles like Genshin Impact and Asphalt 9 look great on the iPhone 13 Pro.

In Adobe Premiere Rush, exporting a 4K video file in 1080p on the iPhone 13 Pro took 26 seconds, the iPhone 12 Pro was able to pass the test in 27 seconds, while the Galaxy S21 Plus lagged by a minute.
