Padma awardee doctors suggest ways to turn India into global healthcare leader

Dr. Rao, director of the National Institute for Health Care Management, tasked a group of Padma awardees with helping India become a global healthcare leader. The doctors came up with seven ways to do so: eliminate poverty, improve health systems and governance, increase government investment in healthcare, create partnerships between regulators and pharmaceutical players, improve detection and response to disease outbreaks, expand R&D, and prioritize strengthening public-private collaboration.

In this era of emerging start-ups and digital innovations, we at T-Hub see immense opportunities to change healthcare in India. The following recommendations made by leading doctors are a great start to transform India into an international healthcare leader.

The Padma awardees of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have called for broad-based improvement in India’s healthcare services. The IMA Padma Award winners hail from different fields and specialisations like clinical medicine, public health and research, but they all share one common thread - they think beyond the confines of their respective disciplines and use their knowledge to make a difference.

India has a population of 10,046 million and a GDP of nearly $2 trillion. With it's enormous GDP and rapidly growing infrastructure, India is certain to take its rightful place as one of the world's most important countries. And yet, despite 2.1 doctors per population, our Indian healthcare system ranks poorly among peers around the world.

The Padma awardees in the medical sciences community of India have said that the country should focus on quality healthcare and change its healthcare system. They also suggested that India needs to overcome the adversities, which can be done with quality healthcare.

India can one day be a global healthcare leader, but to do so, the country is going to have to foster more midlevel workers.

India is blessed with talent and expertise in all branches of medicine. We have the people, resources and infrastructure to build up a first-rate health and wellness system which would help millions of Indians get healthy lives.

Good health and happiness is everyone's responsibility. Being proactive about it will help you stay healthy, maintain your wellness and make India a global leading healthcare destination.

In an effort to make India the global healthcare leader, Padma awardee doctors suggest various methods to improve health care in this country.

From providing education and training, to money and resources, the Padma Shri awardees have been candid about the way forward for healthcare in India.

The country is finding its feet again, but there are still plenty of challenges faced by Indian healthcare. It's time to work together, says Padma Awardees' Council.

India is recognized globally as a hub of medical excellence, and the number of people who trust our government to provide healthcare services is growing. Recently, we have seen several remarkable things happen in this regard. While the number of basic medicines available at a much lower price than those abroad is already an encouraging sign, a good portion of our citizens cannot afford state-of-the-art treatments that are offered by private hospitals in developed nations. To encourage the private sector to offer advanced healthcare services to Indians at low prices, the Indian government should focus more on increasing availability and quality of medicines in the public sector, rather than supporting expensive technology or testing more drugs on animals."
