A very interesting device that will absolutely not hurt any thrifty traveler who constantly uses digital technologies away from home with him on the road.
A business traveler, a traveling salesman, a manager of a large company, a designer, a financier ... and even a vacationer will benefit from the Satechi USB-C Hybrid Multiport Adapter portable USB hub, inside which there is a place to install a high-capacity solid-state drive. Thus, it is very difficult to classify this gadget - but, by the way, is it necessary? It is enough to know that he exists and what he is capable of. Oh yes, and just in case, remember its model number - ST-UCHSEM. Remember? Great, let's continue.
So, we have a hub. This means that it is able to provide connection to several different devices on the same port. USB-C was chosen as a connection: it is with its help that the adapter is connected to a laptop. Also, via the USB-C port, it is supposed to connect additional gadgets that require charging; most likely, we are talking about smartphones, although ... we learn from the documentation that the connection involves a through transfer of the supply voltage - it is promised up to 100 W, but keep in mind that the device will spend 15 of them for its own needs. There are two USB-A (3.1 Gen 2) data ports, each providing up to 10 Gb/s throughput. There is also a 4K-HDMI port that supports refresh rates up to 60Hz.
But the most interesting thing is the ability to retrofit the gadget with an SSD drive. Supported exclusively SATA M.2 (but not NVMe M.2!) Any standard form factor up to 2280 inclusive. The design is screwless, the drive board is fixed using special rubber plugs; it is important to know that there is no place for storing them (and why didn’t the designers provide their brainchild with a convenient case?) - you will have to figure out where to store these latches, especially if you plan to change drives frequently, and even different sizes. The installation itself is extremely simple: after removing the compartment cover, you need to install the solid-state drive board and fix it with the appropriate latch-stopper.
In operation, the drive showed very decent results: the read speed was kept at 450 MB / s, and the write speed was 250 MB / s. This speed is more than enough not only to move large information archives, but also for practical work - for example, for digitizing video or processing photographs. This docking station can connect both a laptop and a large screen, so you can instantly turn your travel laptop into a powerful workstation. An external keyboard and mouse, a laptop with a stationary power supply, a monitor or a TV - that's the workplace even in the field. What can we say about the banal transfer of information from a photo or video camera directly to an SSD drive, bypassing flash dongles and other intermediate data storage?
