Slovakia imposes a 90-day state of emergency because of the pandemic

"The state of emergency is in effect as of midnight on Thursday, November 25, and will remain in effect for a maximum of 90 days. In 10 days, our government will review the situation again and possibly relax some anti-epidemic measures, but this relaxation will only affect those who have been vaccinated or have had the coronavirus," Heger said at a press conference. According to the prime minister, the lockdown will include a ban on leaving home between 5:00 and 1:00 the next day, with exceptions for going to work, visiting the nearest grocery or convenience store, and walking pets within 500 meters of where you live.

Also, all stores other than food and basic necessities, cultural institutions, services, sports and entertainment complexes will be closed. Restaurants can only sell take-out, through the window. At businesses, employers must ensure that employees are tested weekly. Schools will continue to work as usual for the time being.

In addition, one thousand servicemen will be sent to support work in hospitals and nursing homes.

"With these forced measures, we are all paying the price for those who refuse to be vaccinated. Success in the fight against the pandemic depends on the behavior of every individual citizen of our republic. It is now imperative that we all, as a society, come together," the prime minister stressed.

In the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health, a record number of COVID cases - 10,315 - has been detected in Slovakia since the beginning of the pandemic. At the same time, 72% of new infected were not vaccinated. Seventy-one people died; the total number of deaths during the entire pandemic period was 14,056.

According to international health organizations, Slovakia ranks first in the world in the number of new cases (1265) in the last seven days per 100,000 peopl.
