The company's acquisition seems to have become an increasingly dominant trend in the gaming industry today. Seeing how Microsoft doesn't hesitate to spend fantastic amounts of money to be able to buy Zenimax to Activision Blizzard, Sony has also carried out a similar strategy over the last few years. New comments from Jim Ryan as president of Sony Interactive Entertainment also confirms that they will be buying more developers to welcome into the PlayStation family. So through his new interview on the official PlayStation podcast session, Ryan said that they are already working on collaborations with various other companies that will be acquired. With more and more teams joining, Sony's ambition is to further refine the quality of PlayStation games to meet the standards that fans want. Talking about the developer to be acquired, recently rumors circulated that Konami was one of them.
There are several sources who started discussing it, including Kane J. Webb who is a journalist for The Marvel Report media and Gavin Stevens as Co-Owner of Team Blur Games. They got rumors of some kind of acquisition involving Sony PlayStation and Konami. Although the truth is still unclear and could be fake, the possibility of Sony buying Konami is still very realistic. Apart from having an adequate budget, Sony is essentially a Japanese company, so it would be very much more for them to buy a company that is in their own country. If they are serious about pushing the PlayStation library, then acquiring a Japanese game company is also an essential strategy that is likely to follow in the future.
Sony PlayStation Plans to Acquire More Studios
As if appearing as a backlash against Microsoft's insane acquisition of Activision Blizzard, recently Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially purchased Bungie, the developer behind the Destiny franchise. Although the budget they spend is not as crazy as their neighbours, it is becoming increasingly clear that Sony is also focusing on acquiring more studios in the future. This allegation has been reiterated by CEO Jim Ryan through his new interview with GamesIndustry.biz, where fans can anticipate more new acquisitions of other studios ready to join the PlayStation family. This is already part of Sony's long-term plan to enlarge the PlayStation brand with the support of more new talent. To give you an idea, they happen to be more active in making acquisitions over the last few years. Some of those who have joined include Insomniac Games, Housemarque, Firesprite, Nixxes, Bluepoint Games to Valkyrie Entertainment. In contrast to Microsoft's plan to create a kind of one-platform ecosystem that will control more large franchises, Sony's acquisition is more aimed at forming mutually beneficial collaborations in the future. This is at least quite in line with their claim that Bungie will continue to operate as an independent company, including how there are no restrictions on exclusivity for its games. Many parties certainly give different reactions to this claim from Sony. There are some who support this intention, but not a few who do not welcome it positively. Some who welcomed this plan also expressed their hope that Sony could acquire Japanese developers, one of which was like Konami, which is said to have abandoned many iconic franchises. So whatever Sony has planned in the future, hopefully they can take the right footing and can answer fans' expectations.
