The family had owned the old cabin in the forests for many years. It was a spot where families had gathered and kids had played, and it brought back happy memories. But right now, it was a terrifying spot, standing empty and forgotten.
Nobody was entirely certain of what had taken place there, but the accounts were all consistent. There have been rumours of odd occurrences at the cabin. They talked about shadows moving in the night, strange sounds, and flickering lights.
Then there were the cases of missing people. In the past, people would enter the forests and disappear. They had allegedly been abducted by a creature that resided in the house.
All of Jenny's existence, she had heard the tales, but she had never taken them seriously. She was a scientist and a logical, thoughtful individual. She was aware that every situation required a logical justification.
She thus agreed to her friends' invitation to spend the weekend at the cottage. It would be an opportunity to demonstrate there was nothing to be concerned about.
On a Friday afternoon, Jenny arrived at the cottage. Her companions were waiting for her there already. They were anxious to get going and had brought food and drinks.
Just as Jenny had recalled, the cottage was a quaint little space with wooden walls and a stone fireplace. However, something had changed, something that made her feel uncomfortable.
The group settled in for a game of cards as darkness fell. Jenny made an effort to concentrate on the game, but she couldn't help but notice the blackness outside. She kept having the impression that someone or something was observing her.
Then it started.
It started out as just a sound—a tremulous scratching sound emanating from the walls. But as time went on, it got louder and more insistent, until it seemed like something was attempting to break in.
Jenny's companions laughed it off and remarked that it was probably just a squirrel or raccoon. Jenny, however, was wiser. She could feel a knot in her gut as she felt the fear growing inside of her.
The scratching persisted through the entire night, occasionally being broken up by odd creaking sounds and shuffled footfall. While Jenny made an effort to convince herself that it was all in her mind, she knew in her heart that it wasn't.
Later on in the evening, Jenny's companions started to vanish. They were playing cards and sipping beer one second, and then they were gone, leaving only their empty bottles and chairs in their wake.
Jenny was now stranded in the cottage by herself and whatever lurked outside in the pitch-black. Her phone had no signal as she attempted to contact for assistance. The front entrance was locked when she attempted to exit.
Then she noticed it.
A shadowy, formless bulk moved stealthily through the cabin. Its icy, malicious eyes were fixed on Jenny. She wanted to flee, scream, and fight back, but her terror prevented her from doing so.
It eventually appeared directly in front of her as the silhouette got closer. Jenny could scent its foul odour and feel its breath on her face. As she awaited the conclusion, she closed her eyes.
But it never appeared.
Instead, a voice that appeared to be emanating from inside of her head could be heard.
The voice said, "Jenny, welcome home." "We have been expecting you,"
The silhouette vanished when Jenny opened her eyes. Despite being by herself in the cottage, she was aware that she was no longer alone. She had been possessed by something supernatural that was not of this realm.
It was useless for her to struggle back or attempt to resist. She was overcome by the gloom, and she
