The John Wick saga is Lionsgate's flagship. Therefore, the top managers were very unhappy with the fact that the director of the four parts of the cycle Chad Stahelski and the main actor Keanu Reeves decided to end the fourth film. Remember: Wick dies in the end.
According to the director, studio representatives believed that he and Keanu were "completely screwed". But in the end, the director was still able to explain to his colleagues that he "has to end at some point."
At the same time, Chad and his team filmed an additional ending, in which there is a hint that Wick survived. But thanks to the reaction to the test screening with an alternate ending, Reeves and Stahelski realized that their original vision of the ending was correct.
The alternate funeral scene is more mysterious. That's why at the end of the funeral, the viewer looks up like a puppy. We did one test screening, and the audience was very unhappy with the new ending, which was filmed during additional filming. Therefore, we decided that the first time we succeeded, and, to the credit of the studio, they did not even “blink”.
The director recently stated that his team would at least give John Wick a break for a while. Only if the authors have really worthwhile ideas for the fifth part will they proceed to the continuation.

Keanu and I will go on a long trip to Tokyo, sit in a Scottish bar at the Imperial Hotel and ask each other, "What do you think?" Then we will have a couple of glasses of 20-year-old whiskey and share a couple of ideas written on napkins. If we like these ideas, maybe we will make the next film.
Apparently, the break from the franchise is connected, among other things, with Stahelski's employment in many other projects. In addition to "John Wick", the director will also work on the reboot of "Highlander" with Henry Cavill, the film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima and the crime series vice city with rapper 50 Cent.
John Wick 4 will premiere on March 24, 2023 in theaters worldwide. The tape will reach Russia on the 23rd, a day before the world premiere.
