The hedgehog is a crank?

This story happened several years ago in the winter. It was told by my dacha neighbor.

Just before New Year she and her granddaughter went to the country for a whole week. The granddaughter asked to celebrate the holiday not at home in the city, but in the countryside. The child had such dreams: to decorate a Christmas tree in the yard, to ride on hunting skis, to feed the birds in the woods, to run to the neighbors to look at the cows and chickens. Her grandmother refused at first, but she was so persuaded that she had to agree: "The city girl wants to try the country life, let her go.

It was a long drive from the city to the village, with three transfers. The child endured the trip without squeaking. The travelers came to the house. Granddaughter was delighted. She looked around at once. She went into the attic. She found a box with old Soviet toys, half the night parsed, looked at, could not sleep, in order to run in the morning as soon as possible to decorate a real Christmas tree. Her grandmother grumbled to the restless one from the fatigue. "Get down! It's time for bed! I'm turning out the lights! "

So they lay down... And then they hear claws stomping on the floor. Grandma didn't even lift a finger. "They won't eat it. Not wolves. Maybe a rat ran by." And her granddaughter got scared. She shed a tear.

-Eh, you! -Said the grandmother. -The stove was heated. It was warm. So, animals are running from under the floor! It's always like that. Go back to sleep. They won't eat you. I'll kick them out tomorrow.

-I'm afraid of rats and mice, -she whines.

-Well, maybe it's not rats at all. It's a hedgehog!

-How's the hedgehog? In winter? They're sleeping.

What clever kids these days, Granny thought. You can't fool them.

-Have you ever heard of bear cubs? -Have you ever heard of bear cubs? They don't sleep in winter, though they should. So it's a hedgehog. Sleep.

Grandma thought it would calm the child down, but no. She got her curiosity aroused. Now all the girl wanted was to see the hedgehog. Grandma fell asleep, the girl sneaked into the kitchen, where there were strange sounds, and how she squealed!

In the kitchen, rushing through unpacked bags, something gray and big! Bigger than a rat for sure!

Grandma jumped up, turned on the light! Granddaughter squealed. And the gray one squealed, ran around the kitchen in fear.

-Tuck. Quiet everyone! - granny grumbled.

Everyone froze.

-Oh, -squeaked her granddaughter - it's a dog! Where did it come from?

-Maybe it ran away from the neighbors, -said Granny tiredly. I'll chase it away.

The child, of course, did not let the dog out. It was decided to leave it until morning. Of course, we fed and watered the gray mongrel guest the size of a yorkie.

In the morning, all three of us went to our neighbors. There was no time for toys, no time for skis. The girl wanted to keep the dog. And in her heart, she wanted the neighbors to say, "No, that's not ours. "And then she could talk her grandmother into keeping the dog.

But that didn't happen. The neighbors cried tears of joy when they recognized the dog as their Lucy.

-Where did you find her?! She had been missing for a month! We gave up hope, cried the neighbor.-You have made us a very dear gift for the New Year! Thank you!

My granddaughter isn't happy at all.

-In our house. -Grandma answered.

And then the investigation began. I wondered how the dog got into the house.

The neighbor's husband went to check all kinds of holes. And he found a place! A narrow slit under the house in the basement. The basement was closed by a wide door. And in this door they found a gnawed rotten board with traces of obvious dog teeth. The dog would bend it down and climb through. As it climbed, it caught the board on its side, where it had dog hair on the edges. The real evidence.

-That's a hedgehog for you! -Grandma laughed.

-I told you there's no such thing! -she also laughed at her granddaughter.

Only remained a mystery, what the dog ate for a month. After all, there was no food in the house. She looked well-fed and well-dressed. Maybe her grandmother's house was her lodging and she got food during the day. I don't know.
