There can only be one most expensive sandwich in the world, and that title belongs to one of the most "humble" sandwiches: grilled cheese. New York restaurant Serendipity 3 has been awarded a Guinness World Records certificate for the most expensive sandwich ever - it's called Quintessential Grilled Cheese and sells for $214.
The high price lies in the expensive ingredients. To begin with, it's French champagne bread made with Dom Perignon and 24-karat gold flakes. White truffle butter is spread on the bread and then poured over Caciocavallo Podolico, a cheese made from the milk of rare Italian Podolica cows, of which there are only 25,000 in the world. Another detail that affects the price of cheese: cows lactate only from May to June.
The most expensive sandwich must be ordered 48 hours in advance so that all the ingredients can be prepared. However, today Quintessential Grilled Cheese is no longer on the restaurant menu, apparently the dish was not popular.
