The most important thing about what superfoods are and what they are

You've heard more than once that certain foods are called superfoods. But what exactly does that mean? What kinds of foods can be included in this honorable list? And why aren't they really superheroes? About that is my new digest.

What are superfoods?

Some foods have such powerful abilities to positively affect human health compared to their counterparts that they've come to be called superfoods (or superfoods). One has an unusually high concentration of powerful antioxidants. Another has a whole palette of vitamins. Others provide us with a large dose of essential omega-3 fatty acids. In other words, it can be any useful property for our body, the main thing is that it is either exceptionally strong or combined with an exceptionally large number of other beneficial properties.

What foods can be classified as superfoods?

You might think that it is necessarily something exotic. Chia seeds, for example. However, I would start my list of superfoods with the familiar and accessible to us all white cabbage. Although any other kind of cabbage - Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower - is also super!

Another inexpensive superfood that can be found in almost any supermarket is fennel. For some reason Russians underestimate it, although this vegetable is very useful (in particular for fighting cancer) and dishes made of it are unusually tasty. Turmeric, an Indian spice that is also used in curries, also helps to fight cancer cells. And, for example, these foods could well be considered superfoods because of their ability to cleanse the arteries.

As for chia seeds, they certainly also take their rightful place in the list of superfoods, though more exotic, where they are next to quinoa, Himalayan salt and coconut oil (and fresh coconut water is a real superfood for skin and hair beauty). By the way, you'll also find cold-pressed olive oil and frozen berries on this list. And about where to buy uncharacteristic for our country, but very useful products.

One of my favorite superfoods is avocado, a delicious and very healthy, simply unique fruit, which, among other things, is extremely rich in essential fatty acids. Another superfood, flaxseeds, might be a worthy neighbor to it.

You can find several other lists of superfoods on my site. One includes seaweed, parsley, and wheatgrass, for example. Another includes feather grass, sesame seeds, and ginger.

All in all, each of these foods is special, and each strengthens our health in its own way.

Superheroes?

We'd like to think that superfoods are like superheroes: they'll fly in and save the day. But that's not quite true. You can't lead a sedentary lifestyle, sleep deprivation, smoke, eat French fries and pizza - and think that eating avocados or cabbage soup in the morning will help you get healthy. It certainly won't be superfluous and will benefit you, but still, the effect of superfoods is not based on their accidental presence on your dinner table, but on their regular presence in your diet. Be consistent! And then you can get the most out of superfoods, and from ordinary healthy foods, too, and become a superhero yourself - healthy, full of energy and strength.
