German data company Statista has discovered which politicians' names were searched for the most around the world in 2021.
US President Joe Biden was at the top of the list, being searched for an average of 7 million times every month.
Biden became president on January 20, taking over from Donald Trump. Biden was searched for over three times more than any other politician. However, while 55% of Americans thought he was doing a good job right after he became president, that number was just 48% by early December, according to Reuters/Ipsos surveys.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was the second-most-searched politician, with 2 million monthly searches.
Johnson has had an even worse year than Biden: according to YouGov surveys, by December 19, 71% of UK adults thought he was doing a bad job, more than at any other time since he became prime minister in 2019. Recently, Johnson has been accused of breaking his own pandemic restriction rules after it was discovered that several Christmas parties were held at the prime minister's official home toward the end of 2020.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was the third-most-searched politician, with 1.9 million searches a month. Separate data from Google Trends found that most people also searched for "weight loss" when looking him up. This may be because Kim has recently been photographed looking much slimmer than he has in the past.
Germany's Angela Merkel was the fourth-most-searched politician, with 1.4 million monthly searches. She retired in December after leading the country since 2005.
India's Narendra Modi, Canada's Justin Trudeau and Russia's Vladimir Putin were also in the top 10.
