According to a study by Akamai, traffic to pirated digital content in the first three quarters of 2021 worldwide increased by 16%.
What's going on.
The American provider Akamai presented a global study, according to which, in just nine months of 2021 (January—September), digital pirate traffic in the world increased by 16% compared to the same indicators of the previous year.
During this period, pirate sites around the world were visited 132 billion times. At the same time, 61.5% of users visited pages with unlicensed content directly, and 28.6% got to them through search engines.
The most popular section of piracy was television - it accounted for 67 billion visits, while publishing products collected 30 billion visits, cinema — 14.5 billion, music — 10.8 billion, and software and video games — 8.9 billion.
The leaders in the number of visits to pirate sites were the United States (13.5 billion), Russia (7.2 billion) and India (6.5 billion).
The authors of the study note that digital piracy causes significant damage to the creators of books, movies, software - in the future it can lead to the loss of their livelihood.
What does it mean.
Digital piracy is the use of copyrighted works without obtaining the appropriate permissions. Despite the widespread introduction of anti-piracy laws, this phenomenon is closely rooted in the digital space. Often, the use of unlicensed content is seen as an innocent crime that does not harm anyone, but this is far from the truth. According to experts, copyright infringement in the field of intellectual property costs the American economy alone $29.2 billion a year.
According to a study by the European Commission, 55% of the European population have downloaded or streamed films illegally at least once in their lives. The main reasons for piracy were cost (50%), easy access (31%) and prevalence (30%).
A similar situation is observed in Russia, but experts note that the Internet piracy market in the country is getting cheaper, at the same time the audience of legal video services is growing. This is largely due to the elimination of the "Big Three" CDN (Content Delivery Network, pirated content providers) in 2019 - Moonwalk, HDGO and Kodik. Nevertheless, it is too early to talk about the end of the era of digital piracy in Russia.
