There is a mobile gaming console that can replace the PC

Nintendo Switch will soon see serious competition in the handheld console market. Steam announced its own platform, the Steam Deck.

The owner of the popular video game platform announced Steam Deck, a portable console on which we will play most of the games available on PC. The device will go on sale in December. We'll pay $399 (29,500 rubles) for the basic version and $649 (48,000 rubles) for the most equipped version.

According to the announcement, Steam Deck, will be something like a portable PC. The processing power of its graphics system will be 1.6 teraflops, which is somewhere between the Xbox One S (1.4 teraflops) and PlayStation 4 (1.8 teraflops). However, it should be noted that the graphics card will be based on the next generation RDNA 2 architecture, so it is possible that in practice its performance will be higher than the PS4.

Steam Deck will use a special AMD APU, equipped with four Zen 2 cores with multi-threading support, the base frequency of which is 2.4 GHz, and after switching to turbo mode it increases to 3.5 GHz. This is a solution designed for mobile gaming. In addition, the device will contain 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM at 5,500 MT/s. Of course, there will be connectivity via Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, as well as support for microSD, micro SDHC and micro SDXC cards.

The console will allow you to play on a 7-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, which may not seem impressive, but with a display of this size should be more than enough. Brightness at 400 nits promises to be satisfactory, which should provide comfortable gaming even in harsher lighting. The refresh rate will be 60 Hz.

The Steam Deck will have a single structure. We won't be disconnecting controllers from it like we did with the Nintendo Switch. The console will not get a docking station (although it will probably come later as an accessory, allowing us to connect a monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the device). However, at any time we can connect it with a USB C cable to a monitor or TV. The same cable will be used to charge the console. After recharging the energy in the 40Wh battery to 100%, gamers can expect to play wirelessly for two to eight hours.

The full mobility of the console will provide also due to the small size - 298 x 117 x 49 mm. To place the device in a small bag or in the side compartment of a backpack should not be a problem. Its weight is 669g, which is much more than the Nintendo Switch (398g with controllers attached), but still not so much that holding it in your hands for a long time should not tire.
