These people have been living underground for over 100 years! The Unusual Life of 1,700 People

Greetings, my dear friends!

Nowadays we are somehow used to people living on the ground. All human settlements are located on the surface, necessarily close to water.

Yet not everyone would agree with this statement. And there are almost 2,000 such people. They live in Australia. They live in a very unusual place.

The place for residence, of course, was not chosen by chance.

More than a hundred years ago, gold prospectors were looking for gold nuggets in the Australian desert. Among them was Jim Hutchinson. At first the search brought no success. And the search was complicated by the hot climate, the temperature could rise up to 50 degrees Celsius in a day. The prospectors already wanted to stop the search.

But as everyone knows, he who seeks will always find. One day Jim's son, fifteen-year-old William, returned to the camp with a bag full of opals. He found an opal deposit in one of the tunnels.

From that moment, in many ways, opal mining in Australia began. It later turned out that about 30 percent of the world's reserves of these precious stones were concentrated in the place where Jim Hawkins intended to look for gold.

To make the search for opals easier, the searchers decided to go underground. Kuber-Pedi was the name of the underground city. Which in Aboriginal language means "white man in the hole."

Largely influenced the decision to establish an entire settlement underground was the tradition of the natives to dig dugout to escape the unbearable heat. In addition, by 1999 the number of underground passages in the mines exceeded 250,000, so it was decided to divide the existing underground territory among all the participants to continue mining opal.

After that, Kuber-Pedi finally took shape as a real underground city.

You don't sympathize with the underground inhabitants. They are very comfortably settled in. Their houses are practically full-fledged apartments.

And for tourists every year in large numbers visiting this wonderful place has built several hotels. There are also stores bars and restaurants in the underground village, as well as churches of several denominations.

The town has a movie theater on wheels and sports fields. Residents prefer to play golf. It also has its own soccer team.

Every year, Kuber Pedi hosts an opal festival, giving tourists an opportunity to experience the culture of the town, and there are more and more such tourists every year

What began as a need to hide from the scorching desert sun, through hard work and ingenuity has turned into an amazing and full-fledged city underground. This city is almost no different from the ground. Who knows, maybe later such settlements will appear more and more often.

Would you like to live in an underground city? Write in comments.

Sincerely Eduard!
