This story happened to a relative of mine. Just recently we were discussing wells, which one is better to make? Considering that we are relatives, and also neighbors in the apartment and in the dacha, my aunt told me her story.
She was still a young girl of 19 at the time. They had their own cabin, cattle, a big yard. There was always a big old barrel in the yard. After the rains this water was usually used to water the beds. And during the day the water was warmed in the sun.
One day her parents went to another village to relatives and left their daughter to watch the cattle and the farm. She decided to invite her friend to spend the night with her, so that after doing household chores she could do some girlish things together: talk and simply have more fun.
Lida finished her chores, her friend came over, and they decided to have a little picnic in the yard. They brought out watermelon, different vegetables, tea, and began to tell each other different funny stories. The time was late and it was not dark out, it was the middle of the night. They were laughing, remembering, and at the same time they felt eyes on them. And at once they turned their heads towards the fence. There was a woman standing by the fence. She was wearing something long, like a dress, or something baggy, and she was skinny. I couldn't tell her age: she didn't look old at all, and she wasn't very young. She stood and just looked at the girls. Lida said hello politely, but the woman did not respond, and remained silent. Lida decided to come closer, thought: maybe the woman is deaf and does not hear anything. But when she stood up, her legs began to cramp a little. And then the woman said in a strange voice, gruff and hoarse - it was not understandable at all:
- Can I have some water?
- Of course you may! - Lida took a ladle and went out on the veranda to draw some clean water into a mug. But the woman went into the yard and walked over to the barrel.
She stared into the reflection for a long time. Lida and her friend, holding a ladle of water in their hands, looked at the strange stranger attentively. She stared into the water for five minutes, then bent her head and began to drink the water, like dogs or cats do. After that, there was a hum, a snore, some strange noises in the barrel. The girls stared at the amazing behavior of the man with fascination. Afterwards, the woman went to the fence, stepped behind it, said "thank you" and quickly, quickly left. Lida even forgot what they had talked about before.
They slowly approached the barrel and were stunned: there was only water covering the bottom of the barrel. A man in that position could not drink all the water. The girls turned the barrel over to see if there was a hole there from old age, and the water came out. Or from the side. But the barrel was perfectly intact, and more than once Lida herself walked past it, seeing that there was a lot of water.
After her parents arrived, Lida told them about the strange stranger, but her parents thought it was a girl's fantasy.
But the most surprising thing was that the harvest that summer was much better than before, and more supplies were made for the winter. Who was this strange woman? Still a mystery.
