Truth about Pre Employment Personality Assessments

In order to survive, humans have to eat. There's so many options available, depending on your mood. Maybe craving sweets, or maybe just an apple. The familiar sound of an empty stomach, feels like your stomach is so empty, it growls as if its attempting to eat it self. Next step is to wander in to the kitchen and fix up a little snack, open the fridge to find its empty. Ok, time for a trip to the store. Do a little shopping, head up to the register to check out. The cashier scans the items you selected and asks, "How would you like to pay for that?" An honest question really, once you realize your wallet is empty, no cash. Not a problem, debit cards are a convient way to make purchases. After all, that is what over draft protection is for. After sliding the card through, it declines. A whole line of people waiting to pay for their items are growing impatient and watch as 2 or 3 different debit cards decline. They can wait of course while you sort through a large stack of credit and debit cards. One of them must have enough money on them to successfully finish purchasing your groceries... Epic fail as each card declines, so it's time to bust out the check book, however even the check won't go through. A kind gentleman behind you tells the cashier that he will cover the cost of your groceries, all though embarrassed, you mutter out a thank you and race home. The last bit of money you had, has officially run out. The reality of poverty sets in. Being poor, broke and hungry are not fun circumstances. It is time to start searching for another job.

Try taking your resume into different businesses, some places will accept it, however, most of them will tell you that you have to apply online. It can be quite a lengthy process, once they have all your info, most places will have you take a personality test, known as a pre employment personality assessment. The instructions say to answer honestly and that there are no right or wrong answers. Sometimes these pre employment assessments are quick, and sometimes they are not so quick. They are usually timed, which means you only have a certain amount of time to answer each question. Usually, the questions found on these type of assessments and tests seem pointless and irrelevant to the position that you are applying for. Or they will have you read over different scenarios that you may encounter while on the job, and then ask how you would respond or handle the situation. There are a few things you must know before taking a pre employment personality assessment in order to better your chance at passing the test and getting the job.

There may not be "right" or "wrong" answers to pre employment assessments, however, your responses will either get your application thrown out or get you an in person interview. As it turns out, employers take these assessments seriously. These type of assessments are carefully thought out and designed by psychologists to match certain personalities with certain job descriptions. For example, a person that prefers a fast paced, loud and active environment and has a very outgoing personality most likely won't perform well being placed in a quiet office by themselves in front of a computer. Ultimately, pre employment personality tests look for personality traits that match up with the demands and expectations of the job. It makes sense, however, there is much debate regarding these assessments, employers swear the assessments have done an excellent job in narrowing the candidate pool while looking to hire new employees. Thousands of people apply for the same job, employers don't have the time to sort out thousands of resumes, they rely on pre employment assessments that present people that are the best match for the job. The other side of this, If you're are the one taking the assessment, there are many factors that could effect the way you answer. And questions could be misinterpreted or over analyzed. For example, one question that often comes up will ask if you agree, disagree or have neutral feelings towards a given statement such as, "People are generally good and trustworthy", depending on the way you were raised, most people say they disagree, people are not trustworthy, however, employers are looking for people with a more positive outlook on life and the people in it. Bottom line, definitely research the jobs you're applying for and ask yourself honestly if you would be the best fit for the job. Working can be difficult enough, but working in an environment that makes you miserable, the stress that comes with that will take a toll on your physical and mental health, could lead to depression and anxiety that could put an early end on your life! Just like any test, practice and study. There are all kinds of things being said about Americans not wanting to go back to work, I don't believe that to be the case, I think that being informed on these pre employment assessments will make a difference, so many people want jobs but don't pass these assessments so they never even get a chance to have an in person interview!
