What is a fata morgana?

Fata morgana is an unusually amazing optical phenomenon, which is formed in the Earth's atmosphere by layering several mirages. At this effect in the sky you can see all sorts of curved images of objects, replacing each other like frames of a movie.

Mirage is the effect of anomalous refraction of light in the atmosphere, when in addition to objects in their normal appearance, there are non-existent images. The formation of these images is explained by the fact that light is refracted during the transition from one environment to another. This is especially noticeable when passing from a denser cold layer of air to a rarefied warm one. Mirage is formed when there is a clear sky and bright sunlight or moonlight.

But how exactly does a fata morgana arise? It turns out that it happens when several layers of air of different density are formed in the lower layers of the atmosphere due to the temperature difference. These heterogeneous layers provoke mirror reflections of objects and real objects form curved images on the horizon (or above it), which are layered on each other and change sharply.

Because the layers of air reflect real objects that are beyond the horizon lines, the fata morgana allows you to literally "look beyond the horizon.

The fata-morgana takes its name from the mythical sorceress Morgana (Morgana the fairy), who lived in a crystal palace on the seabed and frightened travelers with ghostly visions.
