What will happen to Windows 11 incompatible devices in 2025?

Most Windows 11 incompatible devices continue to run on Windows 10, but what happens when Windows 10 support ends in 2025?

In late 2021, Microsoft released a new operating system, Windows 11, which began to receive high priority from developers instead of Windows 10. Customers with Windows 10 devices received a free upgrade to Windows 11, but only if the devices meet the new, increased system requirements.

While there remain loopholes for users to get around the revised system requirements, the correct functionality of the devices is not guaranteed in this case. Furthermore, incompatible devices will not be able to receive some updates through the Windows Update Center.

Obviously, most incompatible Windows 11 devices will continue to work on Windows 10, but what happens when Windows 10 support ends in 2025? Microsoft has already announced the end-of-life date for the consumer versions of Windows 10 (Home and Pro) is Oct. 14, 2025. By that time, many users will be able to purchase new devices that will be compatible with the new OS.

However, there will still be millions of incompatible Windows 11 devices in use by 2025, and they cannot officially be upgraded to the new system because Microsoft has no plans to change the system requirements. Users will still have the option to upgrade to Windows 11 bypassing the restrictions.

The main problem Windows 10 users will face in 2025 is that security updates will stop being released. Windows 10 devices will continue to work as before, but Microsoft will stop fixing vulnerabilities and security issues after October 14, 2025. Support could come from third-party companies, such as Acros Security, developer of the 0patch Agent service for Windows. Typically, in such cases, third-party vendors do not release patches for all security issues, and some patches are offered on a paid basis

In some scenarios, it is possible to continue using a Windows 10 PC beyond 2025 without significant additional risks, such as when the computer is not connected to the Internet or using a security system that blocks most attacks before they penetrate the system.

In general, most owners of Windows 11-incompatible devices are left with two main options going forward:

Upgrading to Windows 11 bypassing the system requirements check

Upgrade to Linux

Upgrade incompatible devices to Windows 11

Both options are hard to call ideal in terms of user interruption, but this option seems more attractive. When upgrading an incompatible device to Windows 11, users can keep their installed programs and system settings. Many applications will continue to work and no data will be lost.

The main problem with this approach is that Microsoft does not officially support it. Although the company has even issued instructions on how to update incompatible devices, it warns users that their devices "may malfunction" and "are no longer guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates."

The official disclaimer states that the manufacturer's warranty does not cover possible damage to the incompatible computers.

This computer does not meet the minimum system requirements to run Windows 11. These requirements provide for a more reliable and better experience. Installing Windows 11 on this computer is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you continue to install Windows 11, your computer will no longer receive support and updates. The manufacturer's warranty does not cover damage to your computer due to compatibility issues.

What does "This computer does not now meet all system requirements for Windows 11" mean?

For now, the Windows Update Center works correctly on incompatible devices, but that may change in the future. Additional problems may arise when trying to install feature updates. Users may have to bypass system restrictions again to install new versions of Windows 11.

Switching to Linux

The second option available is to upgrade to a Linux operating system. This step will require additional knowledge and effort from the user. It will be necessary to choose a Linux distribution and test the hardware before making the final switch. Most Linux distributions can be run as Live systems, which will not affect the data on the PC's hard drives.
