WHO cites reasons for increased spread of coronavirus

Basic COVID-19 prevention measures must be observed before the holidays to prevent a new round of disease spread, said Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the WHO's Emergency Disease Unit Technical Group.

"One of the reasons we're seeing an increase in the spread of the virus is because of increased social mixing with inadequate vaccination rates, more contagious strains and the elimination of simple measures such as wearing a mask and ventilating. And I think during this holiday period, for the rest of the year, it's important that each of us adhere to these measures so that we're all safe," Van Kerkhove said at the briefing.

According to her, it is important that in all countries, access to vaccines be given first to vulnerable populations to protect them from the severe course of the disease.

The expert stressed that people should also be responsible and try to observe COVID-19 preventive measures, such as wearing a mask, keeping a distance and washing their hands if the epidemiological situation in their region is not too good.
