Why the Chinese are ahead of the Chinese in Portugal in the number of "golden visas" received?

What happened? According to the Border Service (SEF), 83 investors and 109 of their family members received Portuguese "golden visas" in November 2021. Overall, applicants invested about €46.7 million in the program in the last month of the fall, much in line with the results of October.

Nationalities. Throughout the program's history, the Chinese have led in the number of Golden Visa applications approved, with the exception of February 2020, when the Brazilians overtook them. This November, the Chinese were displaced from the top position for the second time in the history of the program - and this time it was the Americans. In November, the Portuguese residence permit obtained 20 investors from the United States, 19 Chinese and 10 Brazilians.

So far, of the 781 approved principal applicants in 2021, 256 were Chinese, 87 were Americans, 59 were Brazilians, 55 were Russians, 29 were Turks and 28 were South Africans.

In 2021, U.S. participation in Portugal's "golden visa" program had already set records in both absolute and relative terms. Eighty-seven U.S. applicants were approved, up from 75 in 2020, and the percentage of U.S. applicants in the program overall reached 11.1 percent, nearly double that of 2020.

What else? Investors are increasingly choosing alternative assets, that is, investment options other than the usual €500,000 investment in real estate. The share of alternative ways of investing reached a record 39% in 2021, compared to 17% three years ago.
